Had an interesting experience the other day. I was feeling my way along the creek bottom and stepped over a rock. Needless to say, the creek bottomr on the other side of the rock was much deeper and down I went. It was only for a second, but it was deep enough to be in my waders.
I can't say it was great fun slogging around with my boots full of water, but otherwise the only casualty was my cell phone (the second I have fried due to fishing).
I can see where it could be pretty scary in cold, fast water to get your waders full of water, so be careful out there.
Granted, my ingenious prevention technique was just to start wet wading since the water has warmed up. Stinging nettles and poison ivy getting to the creek bank has me second guessing that plan.

Scary. I bought a waist flotation device that has a rip cord to inflate in case that happens. Where were you wading?

Ha, ha John. Sneaky attempt to get me to give up my secret spots. I'm on to you. Actually, I may or may not have been wading in a creek that rhymes with booger, near but not limited to the greater Crawfordsville area. (Just between you and me, I was at the new NICHES property) leseller.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=clubnews&action=display&thread=458As a quick aside on that spot, despite its brief existence, the word is definitely out about it as a fishing access.

Join the club. I found a deep hole on the Wildcat about 7 or 8 years ago in late October. That one made parts shrivel up I didn't know I had. Now, I always make sure I pull the draw string in the top of my waders and I always wear a wading belt.
There is a hole at the new NICHES property that is rather deep. Barry found it and it was about chest deep. It's also rather abrupt.

I did notice that after I had water in my drawers, the deeper I waded, the more water pressure there was. That always let to a cool reminder in the nether regions as the pressure pushed the water on up.
If I have waders on, I always have the wading belt on, but I forget all about the draw string. Not anymore!

Water Pressure increases as depth increases. Ah, that Junior high science stuff shining through! Here is a good question for all you science geeks out there.
Let say you are wading a pond with waders on and you waded out to chest high. Then you tripped on a rock and completely filled up your chest waders with water. When you managed to get to dry land and your waders were still full of water, would the pressure on your feet be MORE, LESS, or EQUAL to the pressure on the outside of your boots when you were in chest deep water? Please Explain your answer.

OK Teach I'll take a stab in the dark at this one........equal Static fluid pressure does not depend on the shape, total mass or surface area. water at the same depth exerts the same pressure...........but I could be wrong. and yes there is a nice hole at the NICHES site right next to the bank at the North end of the big island (needs a no step sign like on airplane wings)

Barry, you've been studying! That is exactly right. Static fluid pressure, notice you are in a pond, not a river. The Pressure inside the boots willl be the same as the pressure outside the boots. This is why your waders immediately begin to fill up, when we go under, there is a void, lower pressure inside, higher pressure outside. Water, being much more dense than air, exerts much more pressure than air. Only when our waders are completely full or equal to the depth on the outside, will the water stop going in. Thank you for playing.
I'll have to check out that NICHES site. Never been there.

Okay Teach,
If my waders are full to the tip and I step out of the pond and f$rt, will the water pressure inside the waders allow the bubbles to rise or will the methane expunge the water at the top of the waders and cause a mess? Is methane lighter than air like helium or heavier like my bro-in-laws breath?

...oh, and all this is accepting the fact I'm not smoking a cigar at the same time which would cause a reaction turning my Simms Guide Vest into a smouldering Simms Mesh Vest!

Krebsie,
You need to get out more often my friend...
Oh...and I WILL take this upcoming tournament with picture of the largest ESOX you've ever seen caught in this county! Ask Trent, he knows where it's at!

rf if only you had f$rted before your waders had filled with water and maintained a constant pressure you would have stayed dry.............smelly but dry.

Barry-
I've tried this technique, no doubt thanks to some Taco Bell and cheap beer.
The tricky part is regulating the pressure at various water depths.
I've yet to figure out how people smoke cigars or pipes and still somehow manage to fish. My pipe would end up in the deepest hole in the river and cigars are a bear to light after they've been dunked. I suppose you could rig something up with a lanyard, but then you risk the self preservation doctrine by strapping a smoldering object to your person.

T-
When did you ever drink cheap beer? I'm certainly not suggesting you haven't tipped the odd cold beverage, BUT you, sir, are a beer snob. If it isn't dark and taste like its been filtered through the kidneys of a moose prior to bottling, you won't drink it!

One does not start with a refined palate, but it is earned.
Also, my current priority is quality over quantity. I don't claim that to have always been the case.
