Due to some excellent dialog by several of our members, in the fly-tying section of this forum, we have added another aspect to our season opener at the Fairfield Lakes.
In addition to the traditional opener with our biggest fish and most fish contest, we are also going to add a fly-swap. We are going to limit the fly selection to trout or bass flies. Tie or bring as many flies as you want to trade. Then, we will exchange the flies in a take one leave one fashion as we pass the fly boxes around the table. If you tie or bring 5 flies to trade, you get 5 different flies in return for yours. If you bring 15 flies to trade, then you could potentially get 15 different flies for yours. The only limit is the number of flies that are available to trade. The more flies that are available, the better this swap will be.
For example, I will be tying 12 of my Hex-wiggle mayfly nymphs. I put those in a fly box. Everyone else brings their flies. We will pass our boxes around the table, and since I brought 12 flies, I take 12 different flies, one from each box that is passed around the table. If only 10 people participate, I only get 10 different flies, and I am left with 2 of my original flies. If 20 people participate, I have to carefully select only 12 from the 20 possibilities. Once someone takes the last wiggle nymph from my box, that person returns my empty box to me, and I put my pile of 12 new flies into my box.
Of course, this requires that our members and participants be honest and only take the same number that they bring. If I bring 4 flies, and take 8, the whole swap will fail. Just be honest.
This is the first year for this fly swap, so we are hopeful that everyone will participate! Remember, even if you don't tie your own flies you can buy as many fies to as you want trade.
