I was thinking about what to do for the December tying. Then I seen the post in the November Tying asking if anyone knew how to spin reindeer hair.
Hey Krebsie, how about doing December's tying on spinning "reindeer" hair?
I can't spin deer hair worth a hoot. I have to clump it.

I would love to show you how little I know about spinning deer hair!!! We'll give her a shot. We could also do some stacking and dotting to show how versatile deer hair can be. If there is one thing that gets new tiers excited its spinning deer hair! Krebsie

Krebsie,
Sounds great, if there is anything you need let me know.
I have always thought a Fruit Cocktail was interesting. Maybe I can pickup enough to attempt one.

Rick Sense you are bringing Fruit maybe Dustin would volunteer to do the hamburgers, and Radio could bring the hotdogs? Do you think that Sportsman's Warehouse could provide the drinks? Ha Ha Ha !!! I don't have a lot of deer hair in the off colors. I have earth tones and chartreuse. I think it would be wise to stay with body hair for those who have had a hard time with spinning as it spins a lot better. Belly hair is subject to processing and can give you fits if you get a bad piece. I will figure out a couple patterns that use deer hair for other things other than poppers and give you a list of what we need. Thanks man this is going to be fun!! Krebsie

Ok, now that I've thoroughly hijacked this thread. Anyone besides me thinks it's worth every minute and dollar to drive to Comisky Park for a 'third deck hotdog with Comisky Park Red Sauce'? You can only get the Red Sauce from the guy on the third deck...but worth it!!!

Oh yeh Krebsie, what are we tying?

The dreaded "Hot Dog Fly" It's been the talk of the town lately. It works on all kinds of Large fish er men. Haven't quite figured out how to get the relish look in deer hair yet. I'll keep trying! As far as the Dec. tying goes we can do the Fruit Cocktail first. It has a couple variations that will show one aspect of spinning deer hair. Then I think we should do a First Cast. It will show a couple different things that can give tyers a hard time at first. If we have time I thought it would be good to do some practice spinning. Tying and trimming deer hair is very time consuming so we could just practice some things like marbling, peppering spotting and stacking! Do this without spending all that time doing different tails, dressings and the ever so difficult (Time Consuming) rubber legs in a deer hair bug. I will post a materials list later this week after I find out exactly what's in a Fruit Cocktail. Oh by the way Fruit Cocktail goes great with Hot Dogs!!!!!!!! Ha Ha Ha Krebsie
OH yea That's what were tying!
P.S. For those who haven't seen the new area on the message board, it's a contact list for Members. Put your stuff in there so we can get in touch with each other!!

O.k. I'm in. Fruit Cocktails are fun, I have all the necessary colors, although we could go through the material pretty fast if we have a lot of tiers. Plus, it's better to use larger hooks for beginners. I will bring all my deer hair. I have a ton of it, no need to buy any.
Krebsie, your first cast fly is AWESOME! We should definitely do that one also. December is my favorite month for tying deer hair bugs. There's just nothing better than wasting time during Christmas break on big ugly deer hair poppers and divers.
Wow, what a mess we are about to create...

Thanks to the auction, I now have a vise and some scissors. What are the other absolute minimum items I would need to acquire to participate in December?

Trent,
You will need a bobbin, (preferably ceramic), bobbin threader, hair stacker, botkin, and some heavy tying thread.
You can get these at Sportsmans rather inexpensively. If you look under "Fly Tying Gear" and then "Fly Tying Kits", there is a list of very basic tools you need to get started tying.
