Don W and I went up after steelhead on Saturday December 5th. We arrived as the sun was coming up and no one else was there. Air temp was in the low 20's and water temp was 37F. Not a single strike at our first hole so we headed to the Calumet by Bass Pro Shop. I was dead drifting bright colors with a salmon eggs on the hook. This was the method I used last time that was successful. Not this time. Two different spin casters started fishing next to us and in different holes and one guy pulled out two that were over 24" and the second guy pulled out one that was over 24". The guy that caught two right next to us had a stringer with five fish on it. That when Don and I said screw this and left. Frustrating day.

Did you ask the spin casters what they were throwing?

Look no further I have them and am willing to share. If I don't have exactly what you want I know the secret of where to get it.

John, we may have crossed paths... Its not always that hectic down there, the NWI steelheader's anual state and stream tourney was saturday, i was surprised and disgusted also. That spot is my bread and butter all winter.

Hey Jordan. Dave said you were around somewhere. I didn't realize there was a tournament going on that day. How did you do and what gear were you using? Does a spey rod work better up there? It was just frustrating watching that spin fisherman just walk up and pull a monster out on his second cast. I just keep reminding myself that they are difficult fish to catch on a fly rod.

I had no idea there was a tourney until i ran into one of my buddies, i would have surely opt to fish on sun if i knew, although i went to the Joe on sunday and had fun also. They are very difficult to get to take flies when they are constantly bombarded with bait and hardware, you cant spey fish anywhere in the creeks, i just used that longer rod to better work an indi. Nothing is more pleasing that catching them on a fly, but the love of catching them has caused me to dabble with the dark side, centerpining. I got one that morning, between the two Y's in the Ditch.

Nice fish dude. I might build a center pin rod one of these years. I'm going to work on some spinner flies for future trips.

Pinning is addicting...fair warning.
As far as spinner flies, Dave swears by them. It seems like, if hes fly fishing hes got on a "flying bunny" bunny fly with bead/cone and propeller. White purple and black work well. Whether or not its a fly is another question...
