Hello TFFers,
Reelteacher and I headed up to the dam after work today and had a heck of a good time. Launched the canoe from the public access and at first beached it on the rock island and fished a little in the fast water towards the east side. We noticed no one was in the spot along the rock wall and said what the heck. Canoed across the fast water and beached on the east bank then hiked as close to the dam as we could go. There is a rock shelf that you can wade a couple feet into the water but I would caution anyone who does so. The water gets deep and fast very quickly. However, the rewards are great! Reelteecher developed a fly that mimicked the bait fish that the skip jacks like to eat. It was like every cast with that thing. Incredible!
Reelteach's first hit by the rock wall was a huge wiper I'm sure of it. Teach threw a streamer at a huge commotion on the surface and followed the fish hitting the top water for several frantic casts. He had the rod pointed straight at him and that fish shook his head once and snapped the tippet. Teach stared at me with his mouth open in stunned silence for like a minute then said "Did you see that!" Priceless.
Cant remember if this was a white or a striped.
One skip jack hit a huge streamer Teach had on.
And a nice smallie to close the day.
We both tied some huge flies that we thought would work and white with red was the color of the day for me. I tried a sinking head on my 8 weight and got it hung up in the barb wire fence. Oh well there goes $40 bucks worth of gear. See my fly stuck in the fence.
I did hook up with I'm guessing a 6lb wiper on a white Krebs rattle popper and had him next to my feet and he had one good head shake and was gone. It can be done! I had several smallies and skip jacks to make for a superb evening with a good friend.
End of the cork is 13 inches.
This fish was a hog! It put up a great fight and put a serious bend in my club of an 8 weight. Butt to the lettering was 18 inches So I'm guessing 18.5 inch smallie.
When we got back to the public access site it was dark and I drove the truck down the ramp and left headlights on. One minute later a billion bugs engulfed the area so you couldn't have your mouth open for a second. It was horrible. Teach and I had a great time tonight. He is an awesome dude!
