Phishinincident: You're right about crawdads! Carp love crayfish, so here is a pattern I learned to tie last summer. I've caught one carp on it, but only tried it once. So, I believe it works.
Materials:
Hook: Size 8 2X heavy, 1X short shank mustad or equivilent
Thread: 140 denier orange or red or whatever
eyes: Mono tied on underneath at the bend; small lead eyes just behind the hook eye. A large black bead would work well too.
legs and claws: Two pumpkinseed silly legs
nose and body: brown craw dub mixed with burnt orange antron
swimmerettes: brown soft hackle
Directions:
Tie lead eyes in just behind the eye of the hook then wrap thread back to the bend of the hook. Flip the hook over and tie in mono eyes underneath the bend. Be careful not to stab your self or cut the thread with the hook point. (been there, done that)
Select a fairly large amount of brown dubbing and about 1/4 as much orange antron dubbing and mix thoroughly by pulling apart and putting together repeatedly. This is actually kind of fun. Blenders work well too. Although, I wouldn't know.
Now that this is mixed nicely, tie in a small amount for the nose and then dub around the mono eyes and back down the hook shank.
When you get just past half-way up the hook shank, tie in the sili legs together. Make two loose wraps, then separate the legs to either side of the hook shank and tighten the thread and make a couple more wraps. Finish dubbing between the legs and then in front of the legs so that each pair is now facing toward the hook bend.
Now select a nice soft-hackle for the collar (swimmerettes).
Tie in the hackle feather by the butt of the feather and make two or three wraps and secure.
Work the thread to the hook eye, and whip finish!
Enjoy! Give it a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
