Here are some basics as to how I usually articulate flies…
-THE BOBBLE HEADED BUGGER-
For this you will need
- #4 streamer hook 2X Long- #4 saltwater hook Xshort
-spider wire 20# + and red beads
-Brown hackle and marabou
-grizzly webby hackle
-burnt orange ice dub/ quick descent dub
-deer belly hair brown and burnt ornage
-Flashabou (copper)
-Dark thread and Kevlar/gelspun thread
This is just a brown variant I tie these in brown, olive, white and black….you can take it upon yourself and make your own color combos and imitation s of different things…
The first thing you need to do is start to tie a regular marabou/dubbed bugger, on this fly I left the tag a the “bou” on the shank of the hook and wrapped it down this saves you dubbing on building up a thicker body quicker, tie the hackle in by the tip and palmer it forward, a nice collar makes it look better, whip finish off and grab your braided line.
Youl now put your salt water hook in the vise and switch to the stronger thread (Kevlar)
Youl make a nice thread body with lots of strong secure wraps and end by the bend of the hook… With your perfectly good bugger youl take about a 6” piece of braided line double it over and stick it through the eye of the bugger and put the tags through the loop you’ve made then thread a red bead on the strands so its right at the eye of the streamer/bugger hook. Next secure the braid on the shank, with just enough slack so the bead and bugger and wiggle freely, start at the back and work your way forward and then back with the thread
Then double the braid over back to the rear of the hook and repeat with your thread…then cut of excess (this will not pull out if you apply enough tension while making your wraps!
Now make a dubbing ball right over where you left off with the thread, this is to keep the grizzly collar sticking out straight, you then tie in a really webby piece of grizzy hackle and wrap all of it in a really tight close area.
Tie in your flash (it should be just a bit longer then the entire fly) the more the better within reason! Youl then stack deer hair of two colors so the tips will line up to form a collar behind the head, stacking deer hair (making it two tone) is difficult but the result is sweet, I put the burnt orange on the underbelly for whatever reason, spin away and trim to your liking….
A nice easy articulated that I have had luck on pulling for trout and im sure will work wonders on smallies
