ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/08/kamchatka-salmon/quammen-textJust got the latest National Geographic in the mail. There is an interesting article about the salmon runs and fishing industry/poaching in Kamchatka. I think I recall coming across a reference in the past to that region, probably in a fly fishing advertisement, that "Kamchatka today is what Alaska used to be" (or something like that). Anyway, I'm not 100% sure I know the exact meaning of that statement, but I'm guessing it refers to the large numbers of fish and the relatively few people fishing for them (at least fly fishing). The link to the online version of the article is above. So far, I haven't become a "destination fisherman" since time and resources don't really allow it. This would be an awesome place to go fish someday assuming they don't hose it up completely between now and then.

Kamchatka has miles and miles of untouched forestry and unfished rivers...literally hundreds and hundreds of miles. It's become a destination for flyfishers over the last 10-12 years for both salmon and bass. I guess you can wade miles of river and flyfish with mouse patterns and take humongous bass. Just a matter of time before it becomes abused like everything else. Would love to go though...gotta fly in using old Soviet military helicopters. Gotta be brave too!
