Last week was mostly full of sunshine and warmer temperatures and so the fish are responding favorably. Sunlight warms dirty water much faster than clear water because of the amount of light absorption in the water column itself. The sediment and suspended solids in the water absorb the solar radiation quicker and in turn heat up faster which heats up the water surrounding those particles. As this water warms, various minnow species, shad, and other aquatic animals in the game-fish food chain become more active and more susceptible to predation. Water temperatures last Wednesday taken on Eagle Creek in Zionsville were 58 degrees and a 12" smallmouth bass was caught on a 2.5" white and orange deep clouser minnow. The white bass were not up to Zionsville on that date, but I hear they are on the move northward from Eagle Creek Reservoir. Sources have told me that the white bass run has begun in the East Fork of the Whitewater river in the headwaters of Brookville Reservoir. Further investigation is needed to verify this report. So get out there and help me check these things out! Here is a picture of my first smallmouth bass of the season. What a beautiful creature!
