The weather is just barely creeping into the 50's and the fishing action is starting to pick up a little bit. Small flies are still the ticket and slow retrieves are a must for success. Fished a small pond today with limited success for the amount of time we were there. Caught five average sized bluegill which were great fun on my limber 4 wt. I had to let the fly sink down for about 30 seconds before I began the slow creep back towards my rod tip. The finicky fish would just barely cause the line to stop as they sucked in the fly and I missed about 20 due to my lack of attention. A strike indicator may have helped my success rate but, I'm a little stubborn and decided that the challenge was fun. I was using a size 14 beadhead, green caddis imitation. The fish were a little timid and I believe that a smaller size may have been a better choice, but with limited time, I didn't want to waste time with experimentation. Good Luck Fellas! Remember, the most important thing is to just get out there and fish! Experience is far greater than just reading about it. Kind regards, Dustin Tabert PS. My father and I are heading to Reelfoot Lake in TN. for spring break this Sunday, but we'll be back on Friday and I Hope to see you all on Saturday April 5th at the Opener, at Fairfield Lakes.
