As most of you know, TFF has an endowment to NICHES for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on area waterways. On June 20th, we will be having and outting with NICHES members to introduce them to fly fishing at a new property on Sugar Creek.
They are asking for TFF members to come and introduce them to the sport that we all love, FLY FISHING. The plan is to teach casting, some knots, and actually get in the water catch some fish.
Gus from NICHES will be sending me a site map and directions to get there. All I can say at this time on location is that is between Crawfordsville and Shades.
NICHES would also like an RSVP so they know how many snacks and goodies to buy.
This will be an excellent opportunity to get to know the people of NICHES and the chance to fish a new access point.
I will post the directions as soon as I get them.

This sounds like a great opportunity. Unfortunately, I will be on my way to Disney World, in Orlando, Florida on that day. My sincere regrets.
I hope that many of you can participate in this event. Sugar Creek is an amazing fishery. I hope that the water levels stablize to normal flows by then.

Just to up date. I still don't have the directions but I did get an email from Gus who is the director of NICHES and there should be something shortly on directions.
This will be a great opportunity to meet the people from NICHES and introduce them to the great sport of fly fishing and discuss ideas on how NICHES and TFF can work together.
Information will be add to this thread and also sent in an email as soon as it is recieved.

What is NICHES?

NICHES is a land trust orginization that was started locally. They purchase land parcels and restores them back to, or as close as possible to their natural state. This includes but is not limited to the repairian areas along Indiana's water ways.
Earlier this year TFF setup an endowment to NICHES to be used exclusively for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. This can be used to purchase land for access or to build access points and fish habitat just as an example.
The outing is at a new property that they have purchased along Sugar Creek with a gravel bar and about 200 yards of access to the creek. The parking lot should be complete for this gathering. If not we can park along the road.
Again, I will pass along more information as I get it.

I have added this to the calendar.

Fellow Flyfishers,
We still need people to help with the outting. We will start the day off with basic classroom work. Knots, how to put an outfit together, and casting instruction. We will end up on the water.
This is a new property that NICHES has purchased and is exactely what the clubs endowment is for. We need members to help out.

Well communication FUBAR and a very blown out Sugar creek a side we had a great day with the men and ladies from NICHES. It's really to bad more of our members could not make it as this is a very like minded group on river and stream conservation in Indiana. The work that this organization is doing is a lot more extensive than I had imagined. My thanks to Rick and Gus Nyberg for the introductions to this great local resource. This group has many properties that give us access to our local water ways all a long central western Indiana on many of our great small mouth rivers. Thanks also to Nathan Mullendore from Indiana Small mouth Alliance and Friends of Sugar Creek for giving up a few of the honey holes on the Sugar (see what you missed ). All in all a trip very worth wile as is any day on a river. Barryl

Barry couldn't have said it better. This is a great access point for Sugar Creek. Between the acreage that NICHES and the Sugar Creek Gaurdians own, there is a total of about 1/2 mile frontage on the creek.
When you get a chance, check out the Bachner Nature Preserve. I know I am when the creek gets back to normal. This looks like it's going to be a great place to fish.
