A huge giant Thank You to all who came out and helped with this year's Merit Badge Midway at Camp Cary! With your help we introduced our passion to 25 Scouts and a couple dads as well! Special thanks to Les for the incredible edible lunch we enjoyed! The Good Lord gave us awesome weather and you members brought the gear and enthusiasm to help make the day most rememberable for all. Can't wait to get the boys out to a pond in a month or two and land some big ones! Was also great to just enjoy some fellowship with my fellow flyfishers as well...
Thanks Bob, Les, Dustin, Rick, Andy, Dave, Trent, Pat and Gary! What awesome guys you all are!

Gary; What a great group of young men! I had a great time - I hope we didn't mess them up too much? Pat

For those of you who didn't have the opportunity to take part in this activity with the Boy Scouts, I would highly recommend planning to attend next year! How do you explain the twinkle in the eye, and the grin on the face of young men who just discovered that they really can tie a fly or cast a rod and or both. One of the boys was a repeat customer from last year. He and his dad even took a trip to Canada to fly fish for small mouth, this kid didn't stop smiling the whole time he was in Gary's class. WOW, what a great feeling it is to see kids get excited about our sport. One particular dad got right out there and did the casting class with his son, and did pretty darned good. I heard him tell his son later,"Grandpa has a fly rod at his house, let's go out there on our way home and get it." All I could do was smile!! Really enjoyed spending the day with all the guys from TFF too. It's always fun just to sit and talk with fellow members. Les Eller fixed us all an awesome chillie lunch and coffee and doughnuts for breakfast. Gary Newlon you sure do a fine job with the boys. You're a natural teacher and there seems to be an awful lot of information stored up there in that little noggin of yours. Ha Ha Great time guys! I'll post some pictures as soon as we get our computer repaired tomorrow! Krebsie

I learned way more than probably any of those scouts just listening to Gary. Let's hope we get a few converts to the sport.
As a bonus, I also got an impromptu casting lesson from which I am still recovering. Now I have to unlearn everything and retrain my brain and body. I also scored a bunch of good info from Les on spin fishing, but we won't tell anyone.
There was also a father of one of the scouts that is himself a fly fisher. Not sure if we scared him aware or piqued his interest in TFF, but it is always interesting when fly fishers come out of the woodwork.

...low and behold I just ran across two bundles of TFF fliers after I got home (under some materials at my tying desk). Next time I'll take a bunch of fliers to the classes. I'll bring some to the tying sessions too. I need to print some more here this week to have on hand.
I'll put together my list of students from this weekend and email them to keep in touch and include the link to our website.
Thanks again everybody!

This may be a board consideration, but I heard someone throw out the idea of creating a "junior membership" on Saturday. It could be either a reduced membership fee or fee waiver arrangement. I think the more you keep fly fishing in front of kids, the more interest they are going to take. Getting them to some events and maybe even doing some activities just for the junior members will help get that next generation hooked (pun intended).

Radio:
I was thinking (yes, I realize how dangerous that can be) that it might be nice if TFF did something for those scouts that follow through and get their FF merit badge.
I was thinking a dozen assorted flies courtesy of the club might be a nice momento.
Thoughts?

That could be times 25. We have already donated money to the scouts for materials, I believe it was $150.00. Lets get them to join up and their parents, our time is a nice monento to me. the board is going to take about discounted membership too.
