My soon to be son in law, and grandson, brought this over tonight! An 84# Beaver, might be a new state record. I was wondering if anyone might take a guess at how many flies you could tie out of this thing?

Your soon to be son-in-law looks familiar, but so does the beaver.

Ok Krebsie, which is better for spinning...the bellyfur or the backfur?

Holy Crap!!!
I missed out on the "rat" skinning, but maybe I can get in on the "beav" skinning or did you already skin it out.
Did they trap that sucker?
Is this like the game at the school carnival where the closest to the correct answer without going over wins a bike?
What kind of flies use beaver? Are they strips or just hair flies?

Yes he's a trapper and he's been after this big dude for 4 years now and finally out witted the old boy! He's so big that the largest legal trap will only fit around his head. And that's what did him in. The rat skinning took place on sat at 10:00am and went very well, there was no one there to share in the experience though. But I have acquired another one, and if at some point someone wants a lesson and a hide let me know and we'll do it again! As for the trick question, Yes it is. I don't even know of a fly that uses beaver fur, but I would think that it's probably as good if not better than Muskrat for the thick underfur for dubbing bodies. Anybody know the answer to that one? Krebsie

An answer the question regarding beaver. At least a partial one.
A few years back I recieved a Cabela's fly tying kit. One of the materials was beaver dubbing.
I haven't used it but now that this has popped up I quess I'm going to have to try it.

Krebsie:
I'll take you up on the "rat" next time. I ended up with some family obligations Saturday.
It could be that people who originally developed some of the flies that might use beaver realized a beaver pelt was worth more on the market than it was on a hook???
Does anyone remember the SNL skit "Slapped by Beaver Tails"? I searched for it on YouTube but couldn't find it.

Krebsie, I too ran across a fly tied with beaver and squirrel tail. Can't remember what it was but was a wet fly and looked kinda like a Matuka. Was a gorgeous fly someone showed me and I couldn't figure out the fur other than the squirrel. He said it was beaver. Hmmmmm...

Just to confirm, the state biologist Dean Zimmerman has confirmed this to be the largest beaver ever recorded in the state of Indiana. Although seems our state hasn't been the best at keeping records of these kinds of things. So to date, this is a new state record! He, excuse me, She is going to an Indianapolis taxidermy shop where she will be full body mounted and put on display there in his show room. Sorry about the fur but my son in law said he will get us a smaller one and then we can preserve it and share the pelt. Krebsie

Has anyone ever tried to cook one? I know this has nothing to do with fly tying, but heck I want to know.
I have heard wise tales about eating the tail.

Les, Nathan, the son in law to be, in the picture, has eaten beaver and said that it wasn't to bad. If you have ever seen Marsh Rabbit on a menu guess what that is? Yep, Muskrat!! Hear it's pretty good eatin! If your interested in trying either of these critters just let me know. I'll be glad to catch you one for the table! Krebsie

Krebsie:
do you eat at a lot of restaurants that offer Marsh Rabbit?
I thought a marsh rabbit was that thing that chased Jimmy Carter...maybe that was a swamp rabbit...who knows?
