For those of you that fish with or tie bead head flies, do you ever use anything besides the shiny beads? I have seen some dull (not shiny) coneheads and some less shiny tungsten beads, but even those look like they would reflect light. I'm just wondering if there is discussion out there among tyers about whether the shiny beads put off fish.
If you use something different, what do you use? Could you use craft type beads, or would those not get the fly down like a traditional bead?

Bead color around here really doesn’t matter...Many people use dark beads/cones bright ones silver ones orange ones black ones...
Several patterns like ESL's call for an egg head, where an orange/pink bead saves you a step and drags that bugger down...
Most nymphs you’ll find come with gold beads on them, however few manufacturers are now switching to different more natural nymph looking beads, because many people are using them in western rivers where there’s tones of pressure...you cant buy a fish on the San Juan with a gold beaded fly....
HAHA, I wish I could afford anything tungsten but....darker colored beads/cones will have to suffice, and not sink as fast...
I think you’ll find fish around here, the state, the mid-west, wont be particular as long as your really not pushing your luck on color combos (a trout usually wont eat a # 16 PT with an orange bead on it)
