The Club has a trip planned for paid members on Sunday, May 6, 2012. It takes roughly 3 hours to drive there from West Lafayette. You all know that trout like a hearty breakfast so we will leave pretty early in the morning. I am thinking that we can meet at 5:00 am in the Meijer parking lot directly behind from the gas station (that way we can find each other). I am hoping that the weather cooperates, but I have caught trout on all kinds of days - wet, dry, sunny, and overcast. I attached a map of the tailwater but haven't done that before so I don't know what to expect. If you need one I can forward one to you as well. Bring 3-6 wt rods with floating line, 5x to 7x fluorocarbon tippet for wets, 5x to 7x mono tippet for dries, an assortment of wet and dry flies for trout (as small as 20 and big as 12), waders & boots, sunglasses, sunscreen (hopefully), water, snacks, etc. Sign up by expressing your interest on this thread. I will meet you all at Brookville. It's closer for me to leave from here in Brazil. Keep an eye on the water temps, 53 degree F and they feed like sharks. Also everyone keep an eye on the water levels. Hopefully we all can wade. Were are we going to park? Every thing seems to be Hatching even Tricos..Coop

If I can make it I will be there also. Where is the club planning on starting to fish? The tailwater area, VFW parking lot or the city park? Also what time do you plan on being there? This way Coop and myself can meet up with the club.

For those who know the Brookville fishing area we can plan on meeting at the City Park parking lot by the ball fields about 8:00 am (if that is not too early for you all). I will be leaving the Meijer parking lot at 26 and 65 at 5:15 sharp so I can get down to Brookville by 8:00. Trout Slayer, let us know your proximity to 65 and we can probably work out a car pool arrangement.

Wish you could come fish with us, Barry, and teach us how to catch trout although Indiana trout might be much more conservative and selective. No presidency for me, thank you very much - entirely too much work. I just want to fish more!

I'd though I put this on here just as a reminder: How to Release Trout to Maximize Survival These tips are specifically for trout, but apply to all fish. Use flies and artificial lures to reduce hook mortality. Use single, barbless hooks to maximize C&R survival and minimize tissue damage. Subdue your fish as quickly as possible. Be ready to unhook fish with necessary tools before bringing it to hand. When possible, slide your hand down the line and grab the hook and turn it upside down. Always wet your hands before handling fish to minimize loss of slime. Handle fish carefully! Don’t squeeze them! Cradle trout like an egg or baby bird. Always support the middle section with the palm of your hand. Don’t lay trout on the ground – this can damage their internal organs. Never touch the gills or eyes. Only use rubber or cotton nets, avoid nylon nets with knots. Use hooks that rust quickly, never use stainless steel hooks. Keep exposure to air at a minimum, less than a total of 20 seconds. If necessary, leave a hook that is deeply imbedded in the fish by cutting the line. NEVER TEAR A HOOK OUT OF A FISH! Take pictures of the fish in the water (see http://www.catchphotorelease.com). Always hold fish horizontally, never vertically. Gently hold fish in the current and allow it time to resuscitate. An erect dorsal fin indicates the fish is recharged. Watch the fish as it swims away. If it falters, repeat the resuscitation process. Monitor water temperatures on the stretches that you fish. Sustained water temps of 70 degrees or above mean that trout will not survive a release, either keep or, better yet, fish another stretch. (Go to www.70degreepledge.org to learn more.)

That covers it quite well Coop. Here in Colorado we have the luxury of rarely having to worry about high water temperatures. (you can only wet wade for about 6 or 7 weeks out of the year and still the boys give you a high voice at that) Don if I ever get my video back from my son-in law on nymphying I'm going to put it on loan to the club library. Also when it comes to teaching someone how to catch trout......................I've said it before and I'll say it again "Trout are a vile species" as soon as you think you have them figured out , you don't.

Well I went to Yellowwood this morning and got my limit. They only put 175 in there this year but they are still in there. Just need to find the holes they are in. Heard Brookville was low but we shall see.

Hi Guys, It looks like it may only be Trout Slayer; Coop; Prybis; and TroutKing on this trip. Thanks to Coop for posting the tips on trout handling. I concur with it all. Barbless hooks are the way to go with trout. Please make sure you do that with your hooks during this trip. Here is the USGS link for Brookville: waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?03276000 See you at 8:00am on Sunday, May 6th.
