I was wondering how many of you have a Tenkara rod? How many have tried Tenkara fishing? I just received my first Tenkara rod which I bought from Tenkara USA. I got the Amigo which is a 13'6" 6:4 rod. Tenkarabum and few others sights gave this a good review to use for big fish. I have also been tying a few Tenkara or reversed Hackle flies. Let me know your thoughts about Tenkara.

I personally think it's pretty cool. I dig the pared down basic fishing aspect. I've always dug that. A rod, a line, and a fly.
Good seeing you today.

It was also good to see you again. I have noticed though that you are doing a bit of filming at Fly Masters. I can't wait to see the videos.

Tenkara rods are becoming quite popular here in the west for two reasons, one portability the rods collapse down and extend very easily and fit nicely into a hiking pack. Two the method is basically nymphing the main system used by many for trout. I looked at a few rods and decided for now to try the European nymphing style because I still like casting. I bought one of the new BVK TFO rods (good value for the price, very light) in a 10' 4 wt but have still not ruled out a Tenkara.

Thinking about trying it myself. Like Barry said, it's really nymphing but with portable gear. I've got a 10' 5wt St. Croix for that and love it. But having lived in Japan for 2 years and being a Japanese history buff, I may just try it.

I was flipping through my winter edition of Fly Tyer and on page 10 there is a blurb on Tenkara. It's described as a no reel, fixed line method of fishing. Then it hit me, isn't that what I used as a kid when I went to the local bait shop and bought a cane pole for less then a buck?
Instead of a fly I used a bee moth, nightcrawler, cricket, or a grasshopper under a bobber. Excuse me, a strike indicator.
I still have one of those cane poles in the garage.
