John has scheduled a 'Wading Safety' program for our May meeting at MCL. He gave me the Simms tape of the wading safety video and I've transfered it to dvd. After watching it several times I would very very strongly support your coming to the meeting and seeing the video! It's most educational and taught me things I didn't realize could be life-saving. I thought I knew a lot about wading but this taught me a whole lot more!
As a side: after seeing this I've become a strong proponent of wearing two wading belts depending on the water: one at the waist, one chest high. Highly recommended for Don too!

Radio I recently attended the Denver fly fishing show (Dave Witlock and Charlie Craven were featured presenters) and a great emphasis at a safety seminar was placed on double wading belts, especially with the fast flows of western streams. The speaker also suggested taking a practice fall (in summer of course) to test the balance of your wading system and eliminating the surprise of boot light butt heavy floating as well as how good your system keeps from filling with water. Waders are great at keeping water out ......................not so good when they keep water in. Be safe pay close attention to spring high water flows and make sure the life you save is your own. a little tip from the bear (who as taken a spill or two......................shut up Rick!)

Barry, Dave Whitlock was in part of the video on wading and crossing with a partner. This video is a BIG proponent of double wading belts in fast water.
They also stress taking a test swim in waders and gear to feel what it's like to take a fall and how you would realistically practice what they preach. The best training is to actually get in the water and do it. You'll also see the advantages of wading belts, whether single or double.
On another board a bunch of guys were arguing that a wading belt isn't necessary as water in your waders just makes you neutrally bouyant. Technically and scientifically yes (maybe)...but in a real life situation it's MOST detrimental.
Be safe out there my friend!

No wading belt? ..............Ever tried to walk with your waders full of water, much less swim The idea of equalization has some merit however I would much prefer to float over or around rocks than be pushed under them.

My plans for the April meeting are to show this video, and talk about about wading scenarios. I also plan to have a public pool reserved by that point to have our members get in the pool with waders on and see what it's like to swim and get out.

Good idea JC maybe you could add a rope pull to simulate current.

In April the ice will be off the Wildcat and it should have decent current. Might be a bit chilly. Having taught several course on what to do if your canoe turns over and you are in swift water, I can give you these tips.
If you are caught in fast water and for what ever reason can't touch or mak your way to shore is to get you feet going down stream first and keep those feet together. Keep your arms out to guide you and you chin on your chest to see where you are headed. Try to keep your butt up as to not bust your tail bone on rocks. keep guiding yourself closer and closer to the shore.

Hey Les. Good to see you. It would be great if you could make it to the April meeting to add to the discussion after the movie. We are planning to have an on water safety demo towards the end of the summer to reinforce the April video. Figured the water would be lower and warmer.
We would like to do something with the Boy Scouts this year. Are you still involved, can we help out with merit badges?
