I know that this is a fishing form and this post does include some fishing. But mostly it's about one of the most increditable drives (and I have enjoyed a few in my years) I have ever taken.
I 70 through Colorado and into Utah is a drive everyone should take at least once in their lives. It is by far one of the most beautiful sites to behold in these United States.
My wife and I dorve I 70 through Colorado to Hwy 6 in Utah to see our eldest son in Lehi. We avoided this route in the past because of my wife's fear of clifts. Man! what a mistake, and she agreed.
This drive takes you west out of Denver to Eisenhour tunnel, then on to Vail pass(10K ft). Over the continental divide to White River National forest and Glenwood Caynon along the Colorado River. Once past the canyon you descend down to Palisades and Grand Junction where the Colorado River meets the Gunnison River. On one side of the highway is lush vineyards and fruit tree groves irrigated by the rivers. On the other, is baron alkaline desert that looks like it belongs on the moon.
As you pass Grand Junction and head into Utah the land becomes more arid, and you see amazing rock formations the closer you get to the famous Moab area.
After a seemingly long desert drive suddenly the road makes a gentle assent through a pass between some large sand hills and again, as you follow the Green then the Price Rivers things begin to green up and wildlife returns.
It is a rollercoaster ride of deserts, mountains, and alpine forests. If you ever get to come this way it is very much worth the eight hour drive.
And, yes, I did some fishing on a high moutian reservoir in Utah that yeilded some rainbows but, looking back, it paled in comparison to the journey.
Alpine forest and red rocks near divide
Entering Glenwood Canyon
Canyon walls raiload and Colorado river
North side of I70 near Palisade
Same spot south side of I70 vineyards and fruit trees
Desert Utah
Over looking I70 near Moab Utah
