So, what's the scoop on fishing for steelhead and salmon in the northern part of the state.
I hear Trial Creek and Salt Creek mentioned and the Joe, obviously, but don't know anything about fishing up there.
Can you wade in the Joe or is it all shore or boat? If you wanted to fish the smaller water, where do you access?
If you want to PM me so as not to give away your secrets that would be okay or post in the member's section and link to it here.

Great questions Trent. I suggest you grab a club member, like myself, if I have time and head up there to check it out. There are some great areas, but unless you go with someone, it's pretty much learn as you go. I could not begin to tell you all of the places and possibilites that are waiting for you in the north, only that they are many. Wading is not bad on the Joe, as long as the water is not high. There are a few nice parks right in South Bend that hold fish, and lots of fisherman. Look for the cars at the park access, and then go where the other anglers are. Ask questions as to what they are catching them on. Usually, people up there are friendly and helpful if you are polite and show courtesy first. Be patient, walk quietly, show respect. I personally have never had a bad experience, but being on the water is enough for me to enjoy myself. I have always had success on a #4 Black egg sucking leech. Red, orange, chartreuse and pink egg colors work best. A purple leech is also a good color. Do a google search of the parks along the river and hit them all until you find some action. I usually start with Leeper Park, on US 31, and then work my way south. If you go into Michigan, then you are talking serious territory, good luck! Give me a call if you would like to go. My father and I are heading up to South Bend on Friday, Oct. 30. Hopefully, the run won't be over by then. This cold weather is not good for a long lasting Salmon Run, but it may turn on the Winter Steelhead!
