I visited my parents in Potsdam New York this summer. This place holds special meaning to me. This where we would spend every Christmas and we would go for a week in the summer time. My father taught me how to fish here in the Racquette River. maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=44.654428,-74.978771&spn=0.042312,0.111494&t=h&z=14&msid=112235733223301040167.00048d65a5e37a5e7cff1
I did some exploring this year in the Adirondack State Park and found some beautiful looking water that was artificial lure only and was stocked with trout. I found many streams that are stocked with trout and will try to fish them next year.
My first day fishing we drove to Lake Placid and put in on the West branch of the Ausable river. This supposed to be some of the best trout fishing on the east coast. I saw one fish flash at a dub-ceiver but had no hookups. It is a beautiful place.
I spent most of my fishing time on the Racquette River near Potsdam. I caught many smallmouth and hooked two pike. My dad and I went up this channel towards a hydroelectric dam and fished our way back down stream. The water was so fast that we were barely moving at times while heading upstream. But it was in this fast water that we found the smallmouth honey hole. A small feeder stream was adding a lot of water to the dam output channel and the smallmouth were stacked up here feasting. We spent an hour here catching smallmouth and I lost count of how many we caught. My dad turned 80 this year and has never held a fly rod. I would hook a smallie and hand my dad the rod and let him enjoy the fight. It was a once in great while day of fishing.
The feeder stream. Notice the big round stones. This area used to have a large grist mill.
Right before I broke my 8 weight.
NY bass like the Krebsie popper!
My last day of fishing I was targeting pike. I drifted a Queen of Muddy Waters fly past a derelict dock and this pike came up and snatched the fly as it swung under some muck that had piled up against the dock. I was using my five weight at the time and didn't have enough leverage on that fish to keep him from heading back under the dock and wrapping around a piling and breaking me off.
