Last weekend I had the pleasure of fishing with Don Werden and his friend Greg Montalov, at the Westover Farms in Steelville MO.
Don fished this place about a month ago and was somewhat impressed with the size and amounts of fish he caught. I thought this might be a good place to check out for a club trip for next year. Westover charges $54.00 per day to fish. Sounds like a lot but you don't need to purchase a fishing license and a trout stamp, out of state I might add!! This is a trout hatchery but they will let you fish down stream from the hatchery tanks, and that's where all the escapees and the releasees are hiding.
Sat. morning Don Werden (also known as the "Trout King") had his fishing groove ON and I mean ON. The dude was catching everything in the water. Mostly the Big ones! Don must have netted at least a dozen fish in the 12" to 20"+ range. I managed to land 2 fish that broke the 10" mark and Greg did real well also. We didn't count all the fish we caught but we're guessing that we each caught well over a hundred fish each for the day. Lots and lots of little ones.
Sunday brought about a bit of change in the fishing Groove, Don lost it, or maybe he dropped it when he fell in the muskrat hole and re-injured his torn muscle in his left leg. Ouch! Don't know for sure but he must have rubbed some off on me. Thanks Don! I had a fantastic day. Caught at least a dozen fish that were in the 12" to 14" slot but nothing as big as Don caught on Sat. Maybe it was the Christmas bugger charm that turned things around, the trout seemed to just love that silly little pattern. I fished it with a #18 bead head olive dropper. Seemed like every time it hit the water someone was munching on it. That pattern is in the Wet Fly section of the club site.
I had/have very little experience with trout and how to fish them. After this trip, my confidence level is a bit higher. As far as a club trip I think it would be a very doable trip for most of us and would recommend it for any and all beginners! Lots of fish no long casting necessary, although if you go to the end of the property where it dumps into the river that's a whole different story.
Below is a few pick to wet your appetite. If you are or might be interested in doing this trip next year let me know. If enough people are interested we'll see if we can't put something together. If not, Don is talking about going on down to the white river in AR and doing some serious trout fishing!!
Thanks Don for a wonderful weekend!!
