Went to my favorite carp spot this past weekend and fished out in the big lake for Browns/Coho's and didnt get anything but foul hooked shad, then i wandered up the "river" looking for carp, after a while i started to see some so i rigged up. Got this guy on one of the first few casts on a really fast strip taken on a near-nuff cray. Pretty special fish, first of the season and my first mirror carp, although i dont think its 100% mirror, maybe a common hybrid.

See how the scales of that fish are extra large and irregularly shaped and patterned? Those are traits of a mirror carp, but the entire fish doesnt look exactly like one soo...I think it maybe a hybrid? Anyways im looking forward to this season, that fish also christened my new 6wt!

Jordan I lived on lake Freeman for many years and there is a great spot for carp on a fly rod. If you go up river from Dodge Camp ramp (north) you will go around a big bend in the lake that turns to the left. Pay attention to the channel markers it get shallow and there are a few stumps. As the lake opens up a little you will see some small sand and grass islands. the water is very wade able at this point and full of carp. The locals call this place the sunken islands. In summer it best fished during the week as it fills with people and families on the weekend. Mid summer is a great time to catch them tailing. I used them for red fish practice. ENJOY barryl

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_carpInteresting tidbit on mirror carp for any inquisitive minds... Looks like they may have been bred by monks to have the larger scales to make them easier to eat.

Has anyone ever gone "flats fishing" on Lake St. Clair? I have sat through Cpt. Brian Mezz..? 's talk on muskie carp and smallmouth in that lake and it looked really nice, a guide buddy of mine lives on the lake and mostly fishes for Walleye and Muskies, well he told me he would take me out for muskies but we will see if that ever happens...

When I lived in Michigan, it was getting pretty popular to fly fish on Lake St. Claire for carp. Haven't heard how the walleye and muskie fishing is though.
