I am on the search for the perfect pair of hackle pliers. I am currently using the Dr. Slick hackle pliers with the rubber tip on one end - and they never fail to let the hackle slip right before you're ready to tie it in! Man, does that make me mad - especially when tying soft hackle flies in the 18-20 size range. I can barely SEE the danged things to begin with and not having a dependable set of hackle pliers makes the job MUCH harder. So, what hackle pliers do YOU use? Pat

Pastor, I'm interested in seeing what the answers are from the other members. I've tried probably 3-4 different types of hackle pliers but all seen to have exactly the same problem...

I just use the basic hackle pliers that are spring loaded, and the two noses meet flush with one another. They are the first and only pair I've ever needed. There are several types available, but I think these are the simplest to use. Just make sure to grab the main shaft of the feather and not just the feather barb. Good Luck.

Pat,
I have several hackle pliers. Most of them are the traditional english style. The ones that I actually use on a regular basis are the Griffin Rotary Hackle Pliers.
Cablea's has them for $8.95. I think Sportsman's has them but I'm not sure.
I was at a tying class at Flymasters last year and they had them there.

Rick;
Yeah, the Dr. Slick pliers I use are the rotary type - and I love that - but they won't hold the hackle if there is any pressure at all. So, I'm thinking they are history as soon as I can replace 'em.
