In the Chris Helms video I picked up, he has a neat little gizmo he used to burn out a space in the hair for gluing in eyes.
It basically looks like a pen and with the push of a button, the end gets very hot.
At the hobby stores, they have foam cutters and wood burners, but not something quite like what he uses.
Any idea what it is and where you would get one? As with a lot of items, I'm guessing it wasn't designed for fly fishermen, but was adapted from some other purpose.

Trent I haven't seen the video your talking about but I think I know what he's using. Chad at Wildcat Fly shop in Zionsville use to carry it. I just use a Weller soldering iron, its battery powered and heats up in 35-40 seconds. I've never used it on deer hair but it works for all kinds of other stuff. You can buy them at any Menards store. Or if you'd like to just borrow mine for a while to see if it will do what you want, just let me know. And yes there is some starling left in the Material for members box. I'll bring it Thursday! Krebsie

Yeah, I too have seen this device, it's white with two electrodes on the point. I believe it has a price tag of around $18-20? It looks pretty handy... Krebsie, do you remember how much was your soldering iron?
Trent, how is that video? Are you learning lots of cool tricks? Is it helpful? Have you tied any deer hair bugs since you've watched the video? I own a VHS copy of Tying Bass Flies with Jimmy Nix. I noticed they have the DVD of this at Sportsman's Warehouse. That is an exceptional video. Jimmy even goes out on the water and shows you how to fish each bass bug he ties. GOOD STUFF! I'd be willing to share this video with someone if they were interested.

Dustin, That's the same device and I thought it was around $35. The soldering iron is around $15 or so. I'd be interested in your video but we don't have a vhs player any more. Krebsie

I think the video is pretty good and I'd be happy to share. Basically they do two different bass bugs. I haven't tied any myself because until this weekend, I didn't have the right hooks. I finally got some of the wide gap hooks that should be what I need. I got a couple of different sizes. I think one pack is a 3/0 or 5/0 stinger hook. Those things are huge. I guess I will have to figure out a good bug to tie for northerns or something.
I also tried to pick up some additional colors of hair at the Warehouse this evening. I could choose between yellow and red (which I already had). They were even sold out of the Northern Southern Swedish Indimichituckyanaconsin Pink deer.
I'm sure the soldering iron would work, but maybe I'll shoot Chad a quick note to see if the pen device is something they still carry and what arm or leg I would have to part with to get one.
Dustin, the video of the guy showing you how to fish the bugs would be good to watch. We still have a DVD/VHS combo since we have a number of kids videos on VHS.

Cool, I'll bring the video too.
Ya know Krebsie, I think you're right. Whatever the cost, it was certainly more than I was willing to pay.
