I want to ask for a fly tying kit for christmas, but since I am a rookie at it I don't know what I should be looking for or at.
I have looked at the kits at Sportman's Warehouse and online at Cabela's.
I would like to make sure I have the tools I need and that maybe it comes with materials as well. I guess I could get a materail kit on the side.
Any suggestions or tips would be great. Thanks

Has you noticed, there are several to choose from. It comes down to what your willing to spend. It's like buying your first fly rod. You don't want to spend to much,(just is case) but if you go to cheap you are setting your self up for some frustration.
Here is my take on what is needed. Most important are SHARP scissors. Then a solid vise. It dosn't have to be a rotary but there are times it is nice. A couple of bobbins, prefreably ceramic. A bobbin threader, bodkin, hackle pliers, whip finish tool and a hair stacker.
Those are the basic tools I feel you need to get strated. Usually with a kit you will have to add something.
In regards to the materials in kits. They are usually not of the best quality, but they work just fine for learning and tying a fishable fly.
If you make it to Sportsmans on Nov. 6th I would happy to look at some of the starter kits they have and give you my thoughts on each.
I am sure Krebsie would help you out also.

Thanks for the advice.
I will try to make it to the begining of the fly tying session this month. I have to be in Rossville by 7ish for a leaders meeting with the boy scout troop I am in charge of. So many directions to go and just not enough time get everywhere.
