I tied this thing trying to imitate an Anchovy for a trip to Texas. Didn't catch a thing in TX but it caught snook all day long in Chokoloskee Florida. At the end of the day this fly was destroyed. The flash was gone and it was a bit sparser than when it started and I left the fly on the guides boat. I'm pretty sure this is how I tied it.
Mustad Big Game C70SD size 2 Stainless hook
UTC 140 white thread
DNA Holo Fusion Chartreuse
White synthetic fibers for the belly. I bought this stuff at Flymasters in Indianapolis and I can't remember what it called. Ultra hair? It is as fine as the DNA holo stuff.
1/16th inch flash
3/16 eyes
The fly is tied with an over under technique. Similar to tying a crab or toad pattern. The key to managing how full or dense it becomes is to pay close attention to your thread wraps when you fold the material towards the back of the hook after the initial securing wrap. If you wrap rearward of the fold the material will lay flat and you will have a small dense profile. If you build the thread up forward of the folded material and gradually fold the material over you can get a taller profile on the finished fly. And just like dubbing remember less material is better. I usually take a clump of material that I think will work and cut it in half and that's about right. You should see through the clump of material you are about to secure to the hook.
I use a little hair clip to hold all the material so I can whip finish.
This pic is before trimming and gluing the eyes on.
I forgot the flash so I glued it on in the next picture to show you what it should look like with flash tied in.
Notice all the super glue in the head. This is what I did for that first fly and it gave it a jigging action.
After trimming and the glue set up. Fish on!
