Have any of you received your new Orvis Catalogs? They are featuring the new Helios Ion fly rod. The 6' 2 wt. ZG Helios 602-4 Mid 7.5 Fly Rod comes in at about 7/8th of an oz.! Now, what kind of reel are you going to balance a less than 1 oz. rod with? Of course, with a 6' rod, I don't suppose that would be a big deal.
You can have this fancy rod for about $800. I know Trent is eyeing one of these for me for father(in-law)'s day this summer, so after he gets this baby up for me, I'll let you guys cast it. ;D

I'll be happy to whittle down a willow switch to 7/8th of an oz. and tie some mono, a hook, and put some corn on the hook for you. That sucker will be killer on koi ponds and goldfish tanks.
Maybe when the pirated Chinese version comes out from the reputable Orrvis (or was it Orviss or maybe Oryis) company for $22.50, I'll snap one of those up for you.

T- First flies and now fly rods? There is an aggressive need to engineer that I hadn't suspected until now. And, noting your earlier mention (see INK reference in your earlier thread) of koi/goldfish; I am seeing an unhealthy fascination with ornamental fish. Dude - you gotta get out and fish! Aren't there any fish ponds at Purdue you can fish in over lunch hour or something? Pat

Being a 'gear head', I've had my eye on that. Some companies are now starting to incorporate Kevlar into their blanks. Perhaps that's why they're so light. Now how you go about finding a reel to balance the outfit will be a job, considering the backing and line account for so much as well. Impossible balancing job for me as I like Tioga reels which are pretty heavy!

Wow!! 7/8th ounce.
Maybe you could tape the line to the handle and forget the reel. It would have to be a size 0 reel.
