Jordan Thanks for the input! You know this is going to cost me! Rick Staight handed me a 9' 6" Rod last night at the Sportsmans and you can feel the power in the thing. Another concern is how do the longer rods cast at short range? When were fishing salt you typically are casting to the mangroves at say 70' to 90' depending on how much attention the guy on the pole is paying. Then out of the blues a fish will show up at 5' and you need to be able to drop one real close. How would the longer rods do in this scenario? Krebsie

Well, you don’t want a longer rod to be able to fish next to the boat...simply. It would be a handicap to try and flip one right of the side...you could simply take a couple steps back on the deck to counter the extra length though You will also find most salt guys for whatever reason barely ever fish anything past 9' you cant find a salt specific rod that is available in lengths exceeding 9' whatever the reason it’s not common practice. The professional series by TFO (the black ones) are pretty nice rods for the price... I would also suggest casting rods before buying them, I’m sure there wont be too much need for a new rod in the few coming months a good idea would be going to an expo (usually in the winter) casting a handful and going from there. Unless you are going to go south this winter…

Krebsie,
Jordan mentioned that he didn't recall seeing any salt rods in the 10' range. I haven't either.
The 9' 6" that I brought to Sportsman's last Thursday was one I had built. I wanted a rod to use on the pontoon and for salt.
That particular rod is on a Rainshadow blank. I used a St. Croix reelseat and handle. The guides are saltwater guides. Saltwater guides are larger then freshwater guides. This helps increase casting distance.
Like Jordan said, not many saltwater flyfishers go over 9'. But there is no reason as to why we can't start a new "Flyfishing Revolution".

Rick, nice rod you put together. My next build is going to be an 11' switch rod. Just having problems finding the right parts for it. The blanks are readily available but the longer fighting butt/grip is hard to locate.

Joardan I have a TFO 9wt 9' 4pc in the professional series. Its my go to rod for fishing in salt. It will handle small to mid size Tarpon(80#ers) yet will still give you a pretty good bend with an 18" Snook. But the biggest problem is the wind. 10 to 12 mph is doable but when it gets a bit stiffer than that casting gets really tough. Seems like every spring the wind in the afternoon comes in from the West with an attitude and forces us to fish the Back Country or the Lee sides of islands. After hearing all the advise I think I'm gona check into buyi**#x!!(&%!! Whew, my wife almost saw what I was writing. Got to go!!! Krebsie

I have yet to be back to my native waters since I have become a fly enthusiast. I hope to get down there this spring for some poons...
RF, if you cant find a good premade handle, turn one yourself...Its really not hard and the higher grade cork like the REC rings are of better quality and will last much longer than the premade guys...
If you have a corded power drill you can turn your own grips...
If your serious about building one I would suggest a Buelah, or if you want to spend the money the Z-axis is a great rod...the 11'ers are work horses, lots of fun....

Jordan:
let me just say that for a young guy, you seem to know a thing or two. Good for you. I'm benefiting from your knowledge and I'm guessing we are only scratching the surface.

Krebsie;
FWIW: Have you heard of Red Truck Fly Fishing Co.? I hadn't, but was surfing gear tonight and found the site. They are clearance selling Sage's 10' 8 wt. FLi rod for $211! I'm guessing this is new, out-of-year equipment and it is on th lower end of Sage's fly rod line, but this is a good price. They have lots of higher end gear including Scott rods, Sage & Lamson Reels, Simms boots & other stuff at 30% - 60% off.
It's worth checking out if you haven't given up on your 10' rod.
