Question, How would a 10' 8 wt. rod cast compared to a 9' 9wt. rod? Anybody have any experience with 10' ers? Thinking about buying one for saltwater. Krebsie

Krebsie,
I built a 9 1/2' 8wt last winter. I haven't had that much of an opportunity to use it.
My take on the extra length is this. Extra length will generate higher rod tip speeds which should translate into higher line speeds and longer cast.
The extra length will also start the fly that much higher above the water. This should aid in longer cast. This would be of benefit when wading or from a float tube, pontoon, kayak, or canoe.
The extra length does however add the feel of weight.
I'll try to bring the rod at the next tying session so you can look at it.
If someone has another take on this or complety disagrees with me, get in on the discussion.
This is an interesting topic.

Don't have much else to add but I do fish 5wts primarily and range in 8.5 - 10 feet. Love all the lengths for different reasons. Love the 8.5 in my faster rods. I feel those are my 'super accurate' outfits while my 10' 5wt is great when wading to get some heighth over the water or brush. The 10' seems to load a lot better at shorter distances since the tip is softer.

I think it would be neat sometime to get together and bring your outfits so we can cast other combinations and perhaps discover, either for good or bad, what else is out there. How much money have I spent on rods, reels, lines, etc to find that one out of five is perfect for me and I fish it most often, while the other four sit in a corner and collect dust. Make sence? We live in a community where it's hard to side-by-side cast a lot of rods with the same lines to narrow our searches to what we're really needing. You have to travel to do that.

Hey Radio, Good to hear your still alive!! Did you guys happen to see the new column in the Members only section? Its a contact list, so we can get in touch with each other when we need to. So go there and add your stuff. As for your above post, "Set it up Radio and we will come"!!!! If the 10' rod is a fast action do you think the tip will still be soft or do they tend to just pack more of a punch because of the length? Krebsie

Krebsie, I may just well do that. You see, I'm a 'gear head'. Lets just say I have lots of gear and am always picking up more. What's so neat about this passion is that other members are into tying...or wading...or travel, and I'm always grateful to learn from them. I'm into the rods. I build them now and so know what I'm looking for in components, handles, cork, tapers, actions, etc. Would love to get some folks together and everyone bring your fave gear and we'll have a casting party. Great way to learn about other lines, actions, reels, etc. Just a thought.

Radio:
I feel terrible that you have all those rods in the corner collecting dust. I'm sure they are a pain to have to clean around and could potentially become a health hazard if someone were to trip over them and poke an eye out. So, out of benevolence for my fellow man, I'm willing to take them off your hands and assume all the associated risks and I'm happy to do so at no charge. Just let me know when I can pick them up!

Trent Radio has enough for at least 2 or 3 of us, so let me know if you need a hand carrying all that stuff! Radio, You are really one of the best! Giving and Giving! What a guy! So when are we going to do this casting party? I think it would be a really fun thing to do in a warm gymnasium or tool shed somewhere. Krebsie

Krebsie;
Can't offer much by way of comparison but I did have a chance to fish Orvis' Helios 10' 7 wt. this past week. At about $800 a pop; that's a bit steep for my wallet but it cast like a dream, it was paired with a new Shark Skin line and it would roll cast a mile! The extra length made mending a snap.
When I was first handed the rod, I thought there was no way I could fish a 10' rod, but I really enjoyed it. Orvis lists the 10' 7 wt. as a salt water rod, but it worked well on a steelhead stream. 10' might be a great length for salt AND steelhead/salmon fishing.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Pat, thanks for the info. I can't afford that either, but I bet we can find a cheaper model. Anybody have a price list or a favorite brand? Pat, tell me more about the sharkskin line. Krebsie

Oh...I was given 150 dollars by TFF this past summer for Scout Education. I'll be picking up a couple outfits. Won't be hard to put together a couple outfits that'll be fine for the learning flyfisher. I'll let everyone know when I get them so you guys can use them for educational purposes yourselves when you teach.

Krebsie;
I'll tell you three things about the sharkskin line. One, it's expensive - about $90 a pop. Two, due to the microabrasions on it; it WILL cause blisters on your skin if you strip it through your fingers or try to use your fingers to slow down a big fish. Three, it is, hands down, the longest casting line I have ever cast.
Due to the very small bumps on the line, it makes a strange noise (zzzziiiiiiinnnnnnggggg) shooting through your guides; but for casting-including roll-casting, and mending I was very impressed. The first time I roll cast it; I was trying for about a 30 foot cast and ended up putting it on the bank!
Though I wouldn't use it on any of my bamboo rods (not sure exactly how abrasive it really is); I will certainly be picking one up for my graphite rod this spring. I don't impress easily when it comes to equipment, but just playing with it that one day, I'm guessing I got 20-30% ADDITIONAL distance with my casting - PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT SUGGESTING EVERYONE WILL GET THIS EXTRA DISTANCE. I'M JUST REPORTING MY EXPERIENCE. I really wanted to try double-hauling it but needed to remember I was fishing not just trying out a line.

Pat Thanks for the info! Sounds like I'll just stick to the old technology, it's paid for. Thanks again. Krebsie

Krebsie,
Last year I cast a TFO 10' 8wt at Sportsman's. I was using a Scientific Anglers line that I got at KMart. I think line may have been less then $15.
I think Sportsman's has one on rack now. It's a moderate-fast rod and I can't complain for the price of it.(I think it was just this side of $200)
It should cast respectably with a quality line.

I have: 9'6 8wt rain shadow 10' 7wt BIIX 10' 8wt XP 11' 8wt Z-axis 9'6 6wt S4 I don’t think you’ll find any similarities to casting a rod of heavier weight but just simply a longer rod...I now own all longer than normal rods and love them... I and most all other steelhead enthusiasts like longer rods, be it more line control indi fishing or more play with fighting a ballistic fish I have become accustom to longer rods...and love them all I also for some reason think I cast better with a longer rod They are nice for wading, i.e. your up to your waist in the water but you still have plenty of length above you to keep your back cast off the water...they say that for every 2" above your knees you are wading you lose 5' of reach casting You’ll find that salmon and steelhead fisherman love excessively long rods for whatever reason… My .02 Jordan
