I learned this fly from the Internet, allaboutflyfishing.com. I have been tying it for about 4 years now, and it works very well for carp and smallmouth. I fish it mainly under an indicator, as a dropper or swinging it tight lined in the current. It works pretty well crawled along the bottom in lakes. It imitates a vast array of aquatic animals, so it is effective throughout the year.
Let's tie one...
Hook: Size 8 bent shank nymph hook, 3X long
Thread: Black or dark brown
Weight: 8 wraps of .20 lead wire
Tail: gray rabbit
Abdomen: gray rabbit or muskrat
Throrax: brown and orange dubbing
wing case: fire brown swiss straw
legs: brown softhackle
Directions:
Start a jam knot with the thread at the front of the hook eye. Make wraps toward the hook bend to about half way. Make 8 wraps of .20 lead wire in the middle of the hook shank and secure with thread. Work thread back to the bend of the hook.
Dub in gray rabbit fur well down the hook bend and back up the hook shank to about the lead wire wraps.
Take about twice as much swiss straw as the length of the remainder of the hook shank. Tie in, facing the rear with thread wraps. Now take a nice webby softhackle, this one is from a pheasant. Tie this in by the feather tip as shown.
Pull the feather barbs backward to create a nice tie in point. Tie this in carefully.
Now you are going to dub the brown and orange dubbing only half way up to the hook eye. Then pull the feather forward and tie in with a couple wraps. Then, bring the swiss straw up and tie in with a couple of wraps. Now, we want this to be segmented neatly, so push this backward and continue to dub on top of the tie in point you just made. This takes some practice but this make the bug look realistic. Dub forward to the hook eye. Now pull the feather forward and tie in. Then pull the swiss straw over and tie in.
A great pattern that fishes anywhere. Have fun with this and enjoy. It is definitely something the fish will want to munch on the next time you visit your favorite stream or river.
