I learned this pattern about 2 years ago, but it's really just a modification of the muncher. It's easy to tie and can be very effective for carp and bass with the right presentation. I fish it as I do the muncher. I can and often do incorporate 1-2 inch slow strips with this fly as it can imitate damsel and dragonfly nymphs swimming through the water. Dragonfly nymphs use a jet propulsion system by squirting water out their anus. God's creation never ceases to fascinate me. Cool stuff!
Anyway, let's tie one!
Materials:
Hook: Size 8 bent shank nymph hook 3X long
Thread: Olive
Weight: size .20 lead wire
Tail: Barred olive marabou; 2 strands of crystal flash
Abdomen: Olive sparkle dubbing or rabbit Hare-Tron
Wing: Case: Peacock hurl
Legs: Olive soft hackle
Thorax: Same as abdomen
Directions:
Tie about 8 wraps of .20 lead onto the hook about half way between the hook eye and the bend of the hook.
Tie in a sparse amount of olive marabou about half the length of the hook shank or less, and 1 strand of crystal flash on each side of the marabou.
Select some olive dubbing and dub the abdomen up to the lead wire wraps.
Now tie in about 5 or six peacock hurls near the middle.
Then tie in the olive soft hackle.
Continue to create the thorax by dubbing the olive material all the way to the hook eye.
Next, make three or four wraps of the soft hackle around the dubbing and evenly toward the hook eye.
Finally, bring the peacock hurls forward dividing the soft-hackle and pushing the barbules to each side. Tie the hurl in just behind the hook eye. Whip finish and get ready to fish this fantastic pattern for fish near you!
I hope you give this a try. It’s a winner!
