What are some good spring time patterns? Small baitfish patterns? Does anyone know the differences between feathers and what sections of the bird they come from and what they are good for? I see lots of recipes but not much explanation on why they use certain feathers.

Well Da! Of course we do, there were a lot of us that were disappointed that mother nature put the whammy on the Jan. tying meeting. JC I'm sure you can get in put from club members and I have a couple of copies of "The Art of Fly Tying" if you would like to barrow one. It has some good insight on material selection and techniques.

The Art of Fly Tying was the first book I purchased when I started tying. When I look at all of the other books that I now have, if I had to limit myself to only one, The Art of Fly Tying would be it.
It covers tools, materials, and techniques very nicely. The selection of flies that are in the book are possibly the only ones you may ever need. The book is readily available, I believe I purchased mine at Mejier's, I have seen them also at Wal-Mart.
Carp flies sound great, I was a little bummed that mother nature put the kibash on our January tying.

JC you will have a whole new appreciation for the carp after reading Barry Reynold's "Carp on the Fly". He was the featured speaker on ask about fly fishing .com web radio about a month ago. I don't know if you can get past shows or not I've never tried. Remind me before the Feb. tying class and I'll bring "The Art of Fly Tying" for you.

Thanks Barry. What does everyone think of a book club? We could list the books we are willing to lend out in the members section and have threads on who has what book out and when it was returned.

JC, I have a book by Peter Gathercole that explains the fly tying materials and where on the animal or bird they come from, it also has how to tie 50 failsafe flies step by step. Its a great book for beginner or seasoned fly tyer. Its called Fly Tying for Beginners it is a Barron's book. rt
