Hello everyone. My name is Sam and I'm a student at purdue. I recently picked up fly fishing in late spring after being introduced to it by a friend back home in anderson, IN. I was fortunate enough to attend a few outings and meet with some members of the Reel Women Reel Men group from indy. Bob Smith(if i recall the last name correctly) mentioned that there was a group in Tippecanoe and linked me to your site. Well, I've spent a weekend here and i'v already got the itch to get out on the water, however I dont have any specific spots in mind. Having come from anderson, i'm used to wading the white river, with water ranging from 2-4.5 feet deep. Falls Park in Pendleton also serves as a home base for myself and my fishing buds. What i'm trying to get at is that I am used to wading shallow-moderate waters for crappie, bluegill, and smallmouth, but I'm also up for anything else. I am looking to stay within 10-15 miles or so of town, and keep my fishing to a few hours of an evening. Besides those few demands, I'm just glad to find a group to hopefully fish with ;D

Hey Sam-
glad you found us. Hope your first day back to classes went well.
Plenty of places within 15 miles of town to fish.
The Wildcat is probably the easiest creek to access and will have similar conditions to what you describe. There are a number of public access points and I'm sure folks on here will be more than happy to share their favorites. Some of the common places people fish are at Wildcat Creek Park which is located at the confluence of the north and south branches of the creek. Peter's Mill landing is downstream from the park a couple of miles and is right next to the Eisenhower Bridge if you are familiar with that. If you know Don Pablo's, you would just keep going north on Creasy until it turns the corner and you would park at the access before crossing the bridge.
There is also a public access by Fairfield Lakes near Dayton you could try or the access at SR 25 near the interchange of 25 and I-65.
Another close stream for wading is the Tippy, but in taking a look at the flows online, I would say it is at the high end of what you want to wade. I haven't been by the Tippy since we got the rains of the last week or so, so I can't comment on clarity, etc. It is a little bigger water than the Wildcat and quite a few folks float it versus wading.
Within 25 or 30 minutes, you can be fishing on Sugar Creek which is a well know smallie fishery. If you can get access, there is also the Big Pine. Delphi is a little outside the 15 mile range you mentioned, but you would give Deer Creek a try up that way.
Anyway, others will chime in I'm sure and some of these guys and gals have been fishing the local streams for a LONG time.
You just missed the monthly meeting last week and a picnic/fishing outing a little before that, but the monthly fly tying will be coming up on the first Thursday of September, so come on out for that.

Welcome Sam. I have a quite a variable schedule and I go fishing whenever I can with my canoe. I head to Fairfield lakes quite a bit and post on the buddy page in the members section. Fairfield lakes maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.392107,-86.761115&spn=0.005655,0.013937&t=h&z=17 John

Sam;
Welcome to the area and the board. Most of the easiest access sites have already been mentioned. I would give you two more pieces of advice for fishing this area. First, the further you walk up or downstream of the access sites, the better the fishing will be. Some of the easier to get to sites (but nonetheless great sites for learning how to fish this area) are really pounded - close to the access points. And, second, grab an Indiana Gazetteer almanac. It has roads, streams and dnr access sites. Spend a Saturday or two driving the roads looking for places to safely enter the water. PLEASE ask for permission from landowners if these sites are on private property.

Welcome to the sounding board Sam. Glad you took a moment to introduce yourself. I too, belong to both Tippecanoe Fly Fishers and ReelWomen - Reelmen. I've fished with Bob and Mary Smith many times. They are truly gems to that club, along with many others. Have you fished with Donny and Desi Shidler? They live in Pendleton and fish falls park quite a bit. I live in Lebanon, but used to live in Lafayette, and know it is rich in fishing resources. As John mentioned, Fairfield park is only a short drive to Dayton, and there are four lakes to fish there, plus the Wildcat creek. In town, there are two nice park ponds. Armstrong Park on 9th street and Munger park on Greenbush Ave. are terrific for spending an hour or two catching bluegill and small largemouth bass. Good luck with your course work. There's not a better way to relieve stress than to go fishing! Give us a shout out if your are going fishing. I'm sure someone, if not myself would be happy to join you.
Regards, DT

Welcome Sam. It is suprising how many places there are to fish in a short drive from Lafayette. That doesn't include the many private ponds. I made a list of area fishing holes for the club a couple of years ago and might have a copy around somewhere. It has many places within an hour drive. I will try to get it to you at some time, maybe the next meeting. Keep an eye on the board to find out who is fishing. Most everyone will be glad to take you out.

Hi Sam don't believe everything you read on this board, most of our members really under estimate themselves. For this not being in the great trout streams of the west or the chalk streams of the east, or even the great opportunities of the ever glades......we have a very enthusiastic group. Welcome best of luck and we feed on, neuvo plasma, tight lines.

haha, thanks for the advice. It was nice running into john on my way in, he was an excellent ambassador for the group. =D Was a great day and I caught a few little smalleis. I hope to make it to the tying session on thursday and meet the rest of you, but no promises with school. Wildcat looks to be a promising little creek, thanks again for the info

ya, i used the smaller yellow one and was getting some hits so i stuck with it. Actually, I had 3 takes on it and 2 of them got away after bringing them in to within about 5 feet of me. I think the sets were solid, but i guess when those smallies take to the sky I need work on keeping more tension. But all in all, they worked well, and its fair to say we all like fishing top water when we can here in indiana.

I probably didnt tell you that I crimp the barbs down on most of my hooks since I rarely keep anything. That might be why.
