Has anybody fished the Galien River in Michigan for steelhead (or any species for that matter?)
I'm just looking for more info on it. It looks like they may have a decent steelhead run, but I don't know about access and when the steelhead are actually in the stream. I'm guessing they are not skamania since I don't believe Michigan stocks skamania.
The draw for me is that it looks to be about an hour closer than, say, going to the Dowagiac (something I'm looking forward to doing sometime as well).
Does anybody know if there are also salmon runs in the Galien?

Trent i have experience on the river, actually on both branches. I fish the way uppers of both branches, one flows through Warren woods state park great gravel for spawning fish. The other flows right through three oaks and goes behind a large Republic Industries well...landfill which they have greatly improved on their property, if you can get over fishing nearly on a landfill. Both spots are good in late spring for spawning fish. The mouth in New Buff. is also a good place casting flies and what have you off the jettie can be really fun and productive on the right day.

Jordan-
I've been waiting for you to chime in on this one. I figured if anybody knew, it was probably you. Thanks for the clarification on the time frame. I think I was mapping it to New Buffalo vs to Dowagiac and it was telling me it was about 60 miles, but maybe it was off or the sections of the stream to fish aren't that close to those locales.
Does the Galien have decent public access points? Better or worse access than the "D"?
Are there summer/fall runs on the Galien?
How are classes treating you? Back into the swing of things on campus? How many hours this fall?

Well, as far as the river goes, the D is about 50X better in all aspects, if your getting up and going might as well get somewhere worth the trip... As far as access goes im not to sure, i know you can canoe the G, so there will be put-ins and take-outs so i guess you can check it out from there...
But in all honesty, the G in the past few years has sucked, not so badly in the spring but i wasteland in the fall, one of the branches i fish i guess has some big construction on its headwaters and it has reduced the constant visibility to next to nill. Which affects one of the branches and below the confluence.

So, who wants to plan a trip to the "D"?
I've never been, but I'm ready to go!

Well the best way to approach that river is to go with someone who knows it well and can get you down it, in one piece in a vessel...some of you know such a person, i could only imagine what it would take for said person to do such a thing though...

What bribery and blackmail is required to obtain such a qualified individual??? Short of doing something illegal or morally reprehensible, I just might be convinced to meet your demands. The morally reprehensible is negotiable and as long as we keep the legal misdoings in the misdemeanor category, there might be some wiggle room there too. Seriously though, I'd love to get something put together to run up there. Between the various pontoons, canoes, and at least one known drift boat (since you are offering ), we could stage an historical replication of the Spanish Armada. I also think Pat may have some pool floaties someone would be welcome to try as a trusty vessel. You have to pick between the alligator and the dophin wearing shades. I'm pretty sure they both have cupholders.
