Well, it's great to see our website back up and operational. Wow, did I miss not being able to keep in touch with you guys. Here are a few picks from the Bluegill Bash. Sorry, I didn't get more pics of each of you.
We started off the morning at the Cracker Barrel for some great food to charge our batteries and to exchange some great looking flies. Sorry, as with last year, I didn't get any pictures of the secret baits. You'll just have to ask someone who was there. I doubt if they will share the truth about our flies. I will say that I have personally used each fly that I exchanged and have caught fish on every one. Yes, even the mouse fly works!! Thanks again fellas for that great fun and Fellowship!
We headed to our Hawthorn Park and discovered that the bike race part of the Triathlon was in full swing. The road to the park was closed, so we had to turn around and head to Chinook State Fishing Area. On the way there, we ran into more cyclists. While their road speeds are impressive, it was much too slow for our train of crazed fisherman trying to find the fishin' hole. We took a back road to the place and almost stopped to fish in a beautiful private pond... Within minutes we arrived at our destination and unloaded all of our gear.
The water was crystal clear and the trees and stumps made this area remind me of a pond in northern Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota.
Once we eased our canoe into the water, we found the fishing to be rather difficult. The fish were very shy in the gin clear water. But dad was able to snatch this nice bass from behind a log.
Then, we found a few nice 'gills in a cove under a sunken brush pile.
We caught several nice fish, but as I said, the fishing was tough and slow. Around 12:30 or so we decided to go back to Hawthorn park, now that the triathlon was over. We were able to catch a lot more fish there, but they were rather on the small side. Don W. broke and lost his paddle and we decided to come in and go home around 2:30 or so.
Like Barry said there are a lot of fish in those lakes, but they were not easy to find this year. I'm hoping that next year we can go earlier in the year, and catch the action in the height of the bluegill spawn!
See you on the water!
