This past week I spent a few days in Colorado skiing and fishing, wow was the weather nice! We stayed skied and fished in Breckenridge, the days we skied were in the 40’s but the snow was great. The blue river that runs through town is full of trout, we are usually out there in mid march, when it’s a tad warmer so the flows in the Blue were way down from what im used to, I would guess its at about 40 CFS maybe less. With the water so clear and low, 18-22’s and 6X were a must which isn’t bad because the fish are smaller, the fishing was tough though the two days I fished it only managed a few fish a day but several a day on dries which was sweet. There were no lake run fish up in it yet so all midges and no eggs. The snow just behind the banks was over 3’ deep so getting around was a lot of fun!
Here is a pic of my dad fishing one of the more popular holes in the section just below town.
Heres one of a nice fish he caught from the Blue, little brown with a cool coloration.
One of the rainbows I got, and decided to get the cam out.
That Tuesday we had planned to fish the S. Platte river, as we do every year, we went with a friend that lives in Dillon and met a guide buddy from AK that lives in Can’non City and actually has a slot to guide the stretch we fished, it was running at 120 CFS, out of Spinney reservoir. We got to the lot at quarter to 7 and there was already 4 cars there, it was just below freezing but the rising sun looked promising. On my second cast of the day I hooked a really nice fish (prob 20”) and buster it off 6x sucks when it comes to nice fish! Then the sun came up and then the wind kicked up it blew for the rest of the day at what I would say was close to 30MPH, it was redic, with only 2 fish landed before lunch and more than half a dozen really nice fish broken off/lost I was getting pretty frustrated the ridiculous wind wasn’t helping anything either.
My dad landed this fish before lunch, nearly every fish out there looks like a foot ball, oh so healthy fat!
After eating lunch I walked upstream to try and find some fish got 2 small fish right off the bat and then got a call from Taylor who was way down stream that he had landed two really nice fish and one of them was close to 24” so I headed back down stream to find him fishing a pool hard and switching up flies often. He hooked this fish and I saw it flash and my jaw dropped it was a megladon of a fish! He had it on for several minutes only to have it swim back where he hooked er’ and eventually break him off, I just wanted to see the fish! After we both got done swearing he started to re rig and I was still just standing there in amazement. About 10 mins later he was still rigging and just sitting around so I pulled my rig off the hook keeper and started to make some drifts, using 5X to a 6mm carmel roe bead and 6X to a 22 pure midge. I could see what I though was the shadow of the fish that just broke our hearts and a few drifts later I called it out and said oh yea perfect drift right here, my indi rocketed down, I set….OH MY GOD IT ATE AGAIN! The same fish ate again, and it was on, once again! It really didn’t burn me up or down it mostly held its ground but that was fine, it knew I couldn’t put too much pressure on it with my astounding 4# 5X, after about 10 mins, and the most incredible net job I have ever seen we somehow fit this fish into a larger trout net! I couldn’t believe the size of this Cutt! It was roughly 28x22 the fattest thing I have ever seen! I couldn’t get my hand close to being able to tail the thing, it was the opitamy of obesity.
We took 4, 2 fly rigs from its mouth including mine and tailors and a couple of other heart broken angler’s. Thinking about it I guess it isn’t that odd that the fish took twice in several minutes the sheer size of the fish compared to the size if what it eats pretty much tells me that it has to just eat non-stop, from the guide who has fished and guided that strech his whole life, I was told I caught a fish of a life time! The year prior I was ecstatic about catching a 18/19” or so brown and cutthroat! The day was shaping up after all, even with the gale force gusts.
I called my dad down to fish near where we were and he instantly got a nice cutt followed by a nice bow and several more smaller cutt’s.
After a few hours he had his fill of the fishing being “on” and sat down I picked up his rod and made several drifts and about 10 mins later the indi shot down again and I saw the profile of the fish and just shook my head, 2 in one day? After about 10 mins of chasing this fish and another awesome net job, we landed this Bow, and the pic is of my Dad, Taylor and Chris, me doing the photography, I was pumped! Maybe the best day of fishing in my life, walking back to the truck I was told to have just spent of two lifetimes worth of fish in one day! Which may be alright with me, I am still riding the high of landing those two fish! What an awesome trip!
