Have we ever had a fly swap at one of our monthly meetings? I know we often exchange flies informally, but I mean an actual fly swap for the club members?
We could pick out a month and everyone that ties, tie up a dozen of their fave's and bring 'em in and we go around and take a couple out of each box and put a couple back, etc. It might be fun just to see what you'd end up with at the end of the evening! And, if people don't tie, they could buy a dozen of their favorite flies and bring them and do the same. Might be something fun to do at some point and a way to pick up some different kinds of flies that we don't like to tie/or can't buy like some local adaptions (I like to think of ALL my flies as LA's ;D).
I think we'd have to advertise in advance what kind of flies we'd need for that swap, like panfish flies, trout flies, smallie/bass, saltwater flies or a combo.

I need some of Dustin's bluegill imitations. I am not sure he would swap you one of those for a hook with a pigeon feather tied to it Pat this is a great idea!!

Les; Do you think Dustin would trade one of his 'gill ties for TWO of Trent's pigeon-feather specials? You have to see 'em to believe 'em! I can't take any credit for the original idea. I belong to several FF-ing forums and a number of them have regular, seasonal, fly swaps. I thought, "Hey! WE could do that!" Pat

I would even be willing to go to 3 to 1 on the rare Pigeon on a Stick as I like to call it, but that's my final offer.

This sounds great! I'm all for it. I don't know if I will want to tie 12 of the bluegill specials, but I will tie a few for trade. I will put the step-by step on the website. They are pretty fun and not too hard, just time consuming. They take about an hour for me, each, but I'm a slow tyer. Since we're having the bluegill swap in May, maybe we could do a bass fly swap in April??
COUNT ME IN!

How are you going to include the members that don't tie?

The people that don't tie could purchase a dozen fliles if they wish.

So how exactly would a fly swap work? Kinda of a 'take one - leave one' type of thing? Never done a formal swap but have tied enough to do it...

RF;
There's probably a bazillion ways to do it, but I'm thinking the "take one, leave one" method would work well. We each bring a fly box with our dozen (or so) "specials" and keep going from person to person swapping flies until we have traded with everyone. But, we might want to leave two or even three for a particularly labor or material intensive fly (like Dustin's blue gill special).
Anyone else have a better way to do it? I think it would be fun to see what we end up with!
