Howdy Fellow Fly Tyers,
With all of the vises and tools that everyone received for Christmas, I thought it would be nice to start with some beginner classes.
So for February we are going to go over wings. Tip wings, post wings, quill wings, hair wings, and tent wings.
If anyone has extra vises bring them.
If you have considered tying and want give it a try, come on out.

Don't forget to bring any extra materials you might have for the Materials for Members boxes. Make sure you take the time to go through the boxes to see if there's anything you need. Dustin has one of the boxes and I have the other. Our generous members overloaded the box Dustin bought last month so we had to split it up. The boxes aren't just for materials, there for tools or anything someone else may need to get started. Thanks to all who donated last month. Krebsie

I bought a HUGE, clear 18 gallon container at Wally World the last time I was there. If we fill that up, then we need to start donating to the Boyscouts Too! I have scissors, a vise, a bobbin, thread, and lots of hair and feathers in there, plus all the stuff that Krebsie has. Don't be shy, be prepared to put and TAKE ALL you want!! See you there! Thanks Rick for the wing class! Great Idea! Come One, Come ALL...It's guaranteed to be fun, so don't miss out!

Rick; Thanks for thinking of us beginners! Personally, I just found out that they have pink elk and blaze orange deer someplace! I THINK they grow them on an island someplace so they don't inter-breed with the average herds - but I'm not sure. I'm keeping my eyes open for a blue Indiana deer. Anyway, perhaps we could do a beginners class, say every quarter or so for people (like me) who barely know their bobbin from their hackle? I LOVE to watch you guys spin deer hair and someday, I'll be right there with you - but not anytime soon. I am just tying basic patterns to learn how to use the tools, how to adjust my vise (I already have my vices adjusted ), use the whip-finisher and find a thread pressure that keep ENOUGH tension on the tie without breaking. Anyway, a beginners class would be great. Future topics might be: --Here's the basic tools & how they work --which feathers you use where/how --the difference uses for elk hair: bull/cow/yearling, & deer hair, etc. --WHY there are 4000 different styles of thread, sizes, materials, waxed vs. unwaxed & which to use where & which might be best for a beginner to start with --What synthetic materials are a GOOD substitute for naturals --Does finding dead animals/birds in your freezer NECESSARILY mean divorce, I mean, every time? How should you break the news to spouses, children that they MIGHT find such things in there and its not weird (okay. it is). Could we have this one in FEB? Not saying I need it or anything, but... ;D Pat

Pat,
All great questions. That's why I wanted to have some beginners type classes.
These types of classes will answer your questions.

I am planning on stopping in for the first 30 minutes so you all can see what I have been tying. Unfortunately I have a scout meeting that I have to be at.

Hey there now, I didn't do the cutting. Hope it's not to serious! Don't you know razors are sharp? Well if you didn't,,,,,, NOW YOU DO!!! Before you go after the toothed dragon, I got something to show you. It's another invention, or maybe just a modification,or what ever it is, it's pretty cool, and I need someone to try it out on a fish! I was trying to get a picture for the sight but I can't seem to get a pic that tells what I did. I'll try later Krebsie

It was bleeding bad and its pretty long and deep, wrapped it in a paper towel then went back to the tying desk and got the super glue!

OK, I know it just looks like a popper but, It's called the "Cavitator"! If it works the water will be pulled in to the hollow head and then exit out through the gill slits. Look closely at the pic of the head. You can see that the gills are cut so that the water should spray up and forward each time you "POP" the fly! It's tied on a 6/0 Partridge Pike fly hook, barbless. Just to give you a feel for the size, in the first pic. is a 1/4" bluegill popper. The Cavitator has a 5/8" x 1 1/2" head. What do you think? Will the toothy dragon be interested?

Jordan,
I hope the cut isn't to bad. But hey, blood red is always a good color to add to your fly!
Krebsie,
Awsome fly. Simply awsome.
Just a note on Thursday night. We may not be able to cover all of the wings that are listed. I want to cover basic tools and nomanclature before we get started. I would also like to have everyone leave with a fly. The sooner we can get started the more we can cover.
Dustin, please bring the "community chest". I believe the hooks we need are in there.

Dude cool looking fly. Now will it catch fish? I am no sure how you cut the center hole, but I think they make cigar "cutters" that take out the hole at the end of a cigar rather then cutting of the end. Anyway.... I am not sure the diameter of the the hole they cut or the size of the hole hole you need.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to go this time. I have a conference in Indy at the Convention Center and it won't get over until 5:30. I'm actually presenting or else I'd skip out. I just don't think I want to drive that much in one day. I'm very very sorry. I think Krebsie may have the hooks though, I didn't have room in the small box I brought. I have purchased a HUGE container just for such materials. I'll have to bring it next month.

Dang. That thing is enormous. Looks good though. What size telephone pole do you use to cast it?

Just guessing, but I think I could cast it pretty well with my 9wt medium fast action. The hook is pretty light and the foam is hollow so the only thing that will get ya is the wind resistance. But with a stiff double haul I think this thing will fly pretty good. I'm filling the bath tub as we speak to see if the gill slits work like I want them to. I'll let you know what I find out!! Wish me luck!! Krebsie
