My name is Mark. I am returning to fly fishing after an absence of many years. I have most recently become a bass fisherman and almost exclusively fish with top water baits. Since the end of the past fishing season I have decided to change my tack and start to fish with top water flies for bass. Many things have changed since I was last fly fishing; in fact almost everything has changed. The technological changes alone are a bit overwhelming and so many new materials to choose from. I have done a lot of research on the internet to arm myself with the right weight rod, reel, etc. It was only about five years ago that I was sure I'd never fly fish again and sold everything; rods, reels, fly tying materials, the whole lot. I guess the upside is that by starting over I get to upgrade by about 40 years so it's all for the best.
In looking for flies I realized that tying bass flies would be a good way for me to spend my winters here in Minnesota. It didn't take me long to find Gary Krebs on YouTube videos which is of course how I found TFF. The flies Gary is tying are among the best I see in the many teaching videos on the internet. So many tiers are so sloppy and careless. I am currently collecting materials and have been inspired by what I see here. If it's ok to give a plug, I also bought some very well made bass flies from Robert More in Quebec @ accesseventure on eBay.
I retired this past May 1st after about 35 years working in museums as designer and installer. I'm spending my time now doing whatever I feel like including rehabbing a 1964 aluminum runabout. Anyone interested can see it here: www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14501 I also garden and am making a halfhearted effort at learning guitar. Most recently I winterized what had been a little greenhouse in the back yard so I could rebuild a 40hp Johnson outboard over the winter. I realized at a point that I really didn't feel like doing it and have set up a fly tying shop instead. Among my projects at the moment is taking an old sewing machine and turning it into a lathe for turning popper bodies and I also hope to try my hand at building a fly rod and will use the lathe to wrap the thread.
I really looking forward to spring and the coming bass season. In the mean time I'm going to try my hand at fly fishing while in Belize in March.
Glad to be here.
