Has anyone fished Trail Creek for Steelhead in the fall or winter with any success? Any guidelines or tips? I've also heard there are resident trout there. Does anyone know anything about fishing here, what kinds of fish there are, flies to try, etc?

Hi tnt. Trail creek and Salt creek hold salmon and steelhead. Both those creeks get a lot of fishing pressure so be prepared to have company. To catch steelhead you have to be on the bottom. An egg pattern, green caddis or a black stonefly with lots of lead on your leader to get it down. Fish it in a dead drift under an indicator and set the hook at any bump. I got skunked several times before I finally hooked up. There's a good run behind Bass Pro shop in Portage affectionately called the ditch. It's a channelized section that leads into Lake Michigan. It's deep and swift with muddy banks. Waders, studded boots, a wading staff and 25-50' of rope to get back up the bank is suggested. Smells nasty up in that section but it's the gateway for fresh fish off the lake.
If you're willing to make a longer day of it I would suggest the Dowagiac River in Niles Michigan. It's one of lower Michigan's fastest rivers and it dumps into the Saint Joe. It holds salmon, steelhead and brown trout.
There are tutorials on all those flies in the fly tying tutorial section.

tnt, you can also fish the Rookery. It is a little closer to Portage. Has parking at two places with a mile or so of fishing. Steep banks and lots of wood. The times I have fished it there were very few other people fishing, some just using it as a means of exercise. It does hold salmon, steelhead and browns. You can google it for directions because it is not easy to give directions. It is one of those places that once you find it there is no problem finding it again. Also it is good to join Northwest Indiana Steelheaders and you can get the lock code to fish on there property. I think it is $20. If you are going to drive up there it is worth the membership.
