Brookie on a dry Wild Brown Matthew and our guide, Ian Rutter, holding a nice Little River Brown trout. Little Wild Rainbow Another Speck Matthew's Little Bow The peeking rainbow held by Matthew. I think both are hooked! Luke's first fish on a flyrod!! Luke's little brown trout. Shari and Luke on the stream. Lefty Luke casting on the stream. The wildflowers were beautiful too! This is a particularly nice Showy Orchis. Even though they were small, Matthew and I both got the Smoky Mountain Grand Slam.

Where were you in the Smokies? I've fished around Gatlinburg some of the clearest water I have ever been on.

Looks like a nice trip. I've fished in the Smokies and had a great time. Caught all three, Brown, Brook, and Bow.

I love mountain streams that look like that. Reminds me upstate NY. Nice job Solomogo.

Barry - We were on the Little River close to Elkmont for the Browns and on the Newfound Gap road above the Alum Cave trail parking area for the Brookies.
So much fun, though we had a lot more hits than hook ups. Those little suckers hit fast! I was so intent on my cast and a drag free drift that I would miss the bite. Don't know where I would practice for that around here. Maybe I should try some dry flies at Kreb's pond or Munger Park.
I need a slow action 8'-9' 4 or 5 WT. Anybody got any recommendations?

Traditional action 8' bamboo.
I was walking through a local antique store 4 or 5 years ago and spotted an 8' bamboo rod that believe it or not was straight. Bought it for $37 and had it refinished for $200.
Talk about slow, make your back cast and go grab a sandwhich. Even though the rod is heavy it is still fun to fish. Plus when it's windy that extra heft has some advantages.
Or, Cabela's has some inexpensive slow action rods.

TFO Finesse series rods. I have a 5 and a 6 weight if you would like to try them.

TFO for this year are all new with many improvements. I bought a new 10' 4wt for 250.00 just for nymphing and I love it. I have also been trying the European nymphing methods (very well suited for the type of water you were on) with much better hook up rates than drift and indicators. I will tell you that there is a learning curve to the methods and it takes some practice. Trout are a vile species, some say a devil fish, maybe that's why we seek out the frustration of angling for them.
