I tied up a craw and these muddler variants inspired by Davie McPhail the last couple days (the craw inspired by crayfish). I was thinking of trying them for smallmouth. Has anyone used muddlers successfully? I'm very anxious to try the craw also. The muddlers are size 10's and the craw a size 6. I have also tied a similar olive muddler on a size 6 just with natural brown deer hair and the body of rabbit/ice dub with a palmered brown hackle similar to a wooly bugger.

Those will definitely catch fish. Davie McPhail's videos are an amazing source of knowledge.
You ever get free time, hit me up. The Tippe' is full of smallies who need to see your flies. ;D

Hey TNT Nice lookin flies. Those will definitely work on smallies. Might try weighting some especially the darker ones. You ought to take dave up on his offer. You'll have a blast.

UPDATE! Yesterday (Monday) I walked down to one of the ponds here in my neighborhood in Indy. I started off with one of the olive colored flies in the previous picture except in a size 6. Using my 5 weight with a 5x tippet, I managed to land the largest largemouth bass of my life--- well over 20 inches! Needless to say, it put up quite a fight and I think at first the fish didn't know it was hooked! I also caught numerous good sized sunfish and bluegill on many flies including and especially pheasant/turkey tail nymphs. My computer is down for the moment but hopefully I'll be able to upload pics soon. Even with the drought though, there are fish to be caught, so get out there and fish!

Your flies look excellent! one little suggestion-make your deer hair collars a little heavier,to duplicate the muddlers head and fin image. Other than that -well done. I have used muddlers a lot on the tippe, especially when you see smallie hesitant to bust a "top water".
When they get wet(saturated) they run 2-4 inches under the surface, where smallies feel more secure to hit them. often, while i am driving to my location, i insert the head of the muddler in my mouth to wet with saliva ( and pray the air bag doesnt go off!!!)
My two favorite colors are brown deer hair and yellow maribou tail,w. gold foil body,,,and white deer hair, pearl body, and chartreuse maribou. Both are bright colors, which makes tracking the easier for following fish.

Well, here is the largemouth... I don't have an official measurement, but that clear plano box is fourteen inches. Sorry for a far from awesome picture, but I was fishing by myself. Anyhow, that is one skinny fish! If he were filled out, he would probably weigh a couple more pounds.
