Definition of a great friend: Someone who when sitting in a school of 50+ carp would hand you their fly rod with their fly on it and say give-r-a-try!! Troutking, you're the best! Hahaha.
During our trip down the tippy on Sunday, Don Werden and I had fallen behind JCPilot and Solomogo, a few yards when I noticed that we were right beside a whole group of carp laying in some reasonably shallow water. Don was standing at the time with a popper tied to his line. He slowly sat down in the canoe and managed to get a Morlock Carp Breakfast tied on in record breaking time. I swear it didn't take him twenty seconds to get that fly on the line. I maneuvered the boat a bit closer so that Don could get a better shot at the perimeter fish. You can feel the excitement in the air,,, With all the excitement of an expecting father Don winds up and makes a cast,,,, no takers. Then another,,, and another,,,,nothin. About that time a guy comes down the bank with a loaf of bread and starts throwing it to the carp next to the bank. After making a ton of casts to the fish out where we were with no success we discussed using this guys chumming to our advantage and maybe move in on the feeding fish towards the bank. Buuuuutt,,,,, before we moved I asked Don if he would mind if I tried a couple casts,,,with his rod,, and fly. What a guy, he cheerfully handed over his outfit, with a "Sure, give-r-a try." On the third cast I saw this big feller just dart right over and slurp the fly right up!! I set the hook and Away We Went. This thing didn't seem to have a stop button. No jumping, no long runs, just constant pull, pull, pull, pull. Up to the boat, then, off again for another round!! Several times the fish would make a complete circle around the boat and Don would graciously move all the rods, lines..., and everything else that he might get caught in. 32 minutes later we finally managed to get this thing in the boat. Honestly pound for pound I don't think I've ever fought a tougher fish.
Well Hats off to ya Don! Great "BIG" thanks for lettin your old fishin buddy use your stuff. Wasn't for you I'd a never caught this one! By the way, Don's final words after the fish was landed were,,,,, A@# H*l%. LOLOL What a guy!
