As one might expect Florida in Aug. is HOT. But Aug in Florida is also the start of the rainy season. It rains somewhere in Florida almost every day. It's just during the rainy season it rains A LOT! I wore, got wet, and dried the same shirt four times in one day. The only good thing about all that rain is your gear stays relatively salt free. (I still suggest you rinse it off each day).
Our trip had a few kinks, for starters the boat we reserved to rent, a 17.5' Cobia bay boat, broke down before we left the dock. Our replacement was a 20' pontoon that maxed out at about 13 mph. Not bad for getting in and out of the mangrove channels. But not great for getting across open rough water any time soon. It was a challenge that we tried to make the best of by staying in protected waters as much as possible.
The fishing was OK we had fun as small snook, mangrove snappers and lots of lady fish were on the bite, but not as much as the mosquito's.
Successful flies were gurgles, clousers and the stealth bomber. We only spotted two tarpon and were unable to get them to look at a fly. We did encounter a few larger (4lbs) snook we just didn't get pictures of them.
All in all I'm looking forward to going back as wind, rain nor lack of sun has daunted my spirits in pursuit of toothed critters of the salt.
the small but mighty snook........OK mighty small.
