After having to cancel my two usual spring trips due to my surgery(Wisconsin Spring Creeks and Michigan to fish the Pere Marquette and the Au Sable), I am finally getting "outta town" to spend a few days chasin' trout!
I'm leaving tomorrow (Thursday evening) to head up to relax and fish the Au Sable for a few days and stay at Rusty Gates Au Sable lodge. I absolutely can't wait! Wahoo! I would have preferred to go in May/June to hit most of the late spring hatches, but I'll certainly take what I can get this year.

Trent; Well, I packed her gear last night - as per her direction. So, I would put it to you that she THINKS at this point that she will fish. As you know, the stars will have to align, the weather cooperate perfectly and the fish cooperate absolutely before she fishes more than once on the trip! I, on the other hand, will fish as much as humanly possible while trying to be a dutiful husband at the same time. Remember, I have a brand new UNFISHED 8' 5 wt. Dave Norling bamboo fly rod that I got from him at Christmas that have been saving until I could break it in on trout. Oh yeah, I'll be hitting the water! We have talked about hiking in to see the Chapel on the Mason Tract, so I think she's up for that. We've been up there several times and never fished past the Chapel (there's actually a youtube video showing the open air Mason Chapel). I plan to officate your 10th anniversary re-marriage ceremony in that very place. Uh, let's surprise Heather with that! Pat

Pat,
Have a great trip. It's good to hear that your getting back on the water.
An UNFISHED 5wt bamboo!?
I'm up for adoption. I'd make sure it was fished for you. Did I say I'm up for adoption?

Gentlemen (and you, too, Trent ;D);
Thank you for your kind words. I do feel better and I can't wait to get back into cold, clean trout water again. Whether or not I catch anything, it'll be good to get away for a few days.
And, Rick, you have no idea how hard it was to let that rod remain unfished for almost 8 months! It's one of Dave Norling's (Minneapolis, MN. bamboo rod maker) 8' 5 wt. hollowbuilt rods built on a slightly modified E. C. Powell taper (Powell's tapers are reported by cane experts as the best casting of all bamboo rods). David sent it to me right after Christmas and I promised myself that I would wait to break it in on trout waters FIRST - then I had this surgery in late spring, right before we were heading up to spend a week in Wisconsin. I have 2 other Norling rods and they are wonderful rods. So, I've been really itching to get it in my hands and fish with it! Can't wait.
Anyway, I'll let you guys know how the trip went when I get back ( probably at the tying session at St. A's on Thursday evening).

Pat, that Itch you speak of, we can all empathize with. Best of luck and at least your better half will consider fishing.

At least it's an itch you can scratch in public.

Rick; Good point, BUT, I pretty much scratch ALL my itches in public. That way no way can whisper behind my back, "Do you know what this guy does when we're not around?" Sad but true. Pat

Just got back from Michigan. What a trip! Cathy and I fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday. She was a trooper - fished all the time I fished except for setting Saturday afternoon out - I fished in the rain for a couple of hours and she took a pass! We mostly fished the North and South branches because the "canoe hatch" was in full force! Not much chance of wade fishing on the main stem except right at dark! Hatches were trico's (early) and bwo's when it was overcast and evening. I mainly fished double set-ups of nymphs. Broke in the new fly rod and had a blast doing it. The brookies were very willing. We didn't catch huge fish but the catching was good - the biggest I caught was about an 11" brownie and a 13" brookie - together they would be ONE of Jordan's fish! Cathy caught about 25 or 30 fish in the three days. Her previous high for catching on one trip was about 4. Wonderfully relaxing and except for the rainstorm I fished through, the weather was great. And, my rehab is certainly working. I fished for 8 hours on Sunday (celebrated the sabbath, baby!) and felt great. Anyway, if I can talk Trent into posting a couple pictures for me, I'll get a couple added to this post. Pat

The pics loaded a little smaller than I anticipated. If you want me to retry and see if I can get them a little bigger, let me know.
