Here is a great fly that I learned from guide Charlie Limpert in eastern Pennsylvania. This is his "go to" fly for big browns and smallmouth. From my experience, this fly works like a charm. We fished it on a sink-tip line down and across the current with 2 - 6 inch strips, varying the speed of the retrieve depending on the speed of the current and depth of the water. It may look like a goose turd to us, but to the fish, it looks like dinner! Let's tie a few and find out for yourself...
Materials:
Hook: Mustad Size 4; 2XH/5XL
Thread: Red, 210 Denier
Eyes: 5/32 Medium Brass
Tail: Olive Zonker Strip
Body: 5 wraps of Olive Crosscut strip
Head: Brown/Olive Wool
1. Place hook in vise and wrap in the eyes about 1/4" from the eye of the hook.
2. Wrap thread back to the bend of the hook and tie in olive zonker strip at the bend. The length of the zonker strip should be about the same length as the hook shank.
3. Tie in the olive crosscut strip and ensure that the hairs are facing the rear of the hook. Wrap the thread toward the front of the hook and behind the brass eyes.
4. Wrap the crosscut strip around and toward the front of the hook. Tease out the fibers making sure that the hairs don't get trapped after each turn. Tie the strip off behind the brass eyes.
5. Clip off a clump of wool and use the tip half. Using 2 wraps of the thread, tie in the wool just behind the eyes and place the tips toward the rear of the fly. Repeat on the opposite side.
6. Pull the wool back and advance the thread in front of the eyes and tie in the base half of the wool on top and bottom of the hook. Whip finish.
7. Use scissors and shape the wool head to a rounded fishy shape. Remember, the brass eyes will cause this fly to ride hook point up, so shape the head accordingly.
Give the turd a try! And please report your results. I would love to hear about the big fish you catch with it!
