Here is a step by step on how to tie the 10 sec. egg, it’s the same as a glo-bug or something like that this is just a faster easier and more efficient way to tie it. This is pretty much a go-to fly for any avid steelheader…
First youl need some McFly Foam, this I believe is made by Rainy’s sorry I don’t have a label to show any of you its primarily for eggs and come in a variety of those colors, cheese, orange, peach, golden etc… This stuff is very similar to regular glo-bug yarn except its like foamy and will stick to coarse things.
All you need is the foam in two colors (or just one and a red marker) People mostly use a lighter eggier color for the main and a dark blood-like color for the dot. You need a pen, much like the one we were given to aide us in packing deer hair but it needs to have the stock diameter at the tip (this is very important) Youl also need a mono loop to pull the material into the pen tube, scissors with serrations work the best, some egg hooks (TMC 105, TMC 2457) and orange-is thread.
Youl first just make a small thread body at the zenith (very top) of the hook…
Then take your two colors use a fairly good amount (2 strands right out of the bag) of the peach color (I believe its actually called Illimana pink) and one very slender strand of the darker red.
Youl stack them on one another.
Youl then thread the mono loop through the smaller and put your stacked “foam” through the loop and the pull it through so there is material sticking from the end youd normaly write with.
Youl cut back the material so you have a very small amount sticking from the pen and youl pet a few hard wraps over the pen so they slide off and onto the “foam” with a minimal distance from the end of the pen. You will also want to make sure you position the material so that the red color is on the vary top…
Next youl pull the pen exposing more material, an amount to match what you had sticking out in the fist place (usually less than one would think) and just cut it to make a nice even round ball….
Parachute it in a way to give it perfect shape throw some more wraps in front of the egg and whip it off …. Your done
With a little bit of prep time you can ties these things in less than 10 seconds how efficient is that?
The fly is nearly entirely on the top of the hook leaving nearly 100% gap for good penetration on hooksets…
I usually do them on a smaller TMC 105 like a #10 but im all out but these will work great, I tend to think that curved scissors work better but im not sure….but the serrations really help for cutting the whacky material…
